    OPinions please

After a long discussion with the wife she is happy with me to get a longer lens, however she would appreciate it if I didn't spend £200+ on it for now(which I can understand with 2 young girls to pay for). She has said that when childcare payments stop in a couple of years I could treat myself to a better quality lens.

So my choices are really between the following to lenses. I would appreciate your valued input into which one you would choose and why. I fully appreciate that neither will be the fastest lens in the world and that the IQ won't be up with that of an L lens.

Sigma AF 70-300mm f4-5.6 DG APO Macro

    Tamron LD DI Macro zoom lens - 70 mm - 300 mm - F/4.0-5.6

    Re: OPinions please

Thanks for those Paul I had seen those and I know they would yield better results, however at this time and for the foreseable future are out of price range, I think I am edging towards the Tamron lens as I have the 55-200 version and seem to be able to get some good images from it. I have also used my fathers copy of it.

If I manage to actually make any money out of my images the wife is more than happy for me to use that to fund further upgrades as it wouldn't be coming out of the family finances, which is something that I don't have an issue with. If I'm honest I can't really justify spending a lot on photo gear at the moment but feel I need the extra reach that the 300mm would give me

      Just a small observation here:

You have a 17 - 85mm and you would like to have a 70 -300mm. Those two lenses would make the 55 - 200mm you already have pretty much redundant. Therefore part-ex it towards the 70 - 300 that you want, rather than having second best with the 70 - 300mm you can afford.

Wish list Canon EF 500 mm f/4 L IS USM.

Like Colin says, stick your 55-200 in the trade in for MPB and see what they give you for it.

They are selling the Tamron at the cheapest end for £59 and the higher end £69, so They'll likely say about £30-£40. (Actually quiet surprised at that) It's still going to be money off. Would mean the Canon is going to be about £170. A total bargain from the £300 it is new I think.

The Lens you want is selling on there in the sale just now, at £54. You could trade yours and get this for curry money.

Think you'll be OK with the Tamron. It's a lens I've been quite happy with. At some point in future I'll be looking to get an L lens but think I'll probably retain the Tamron.

I think you have the VC Di SP version. It's a different kettle of monkeys I'm sure :) I'd have kept mine too if I had a bigger bag to keep them all in lol

Kind of depends how you feel about buying from Ebay/Gumtree etc.

But possible to get for less than £200

Hi Paul, I'd definitely give eBay a whirl. If you look long enough, something will crop up in your prove range locally enough so you can arrange to go and test it.

I picked up the Tamron 28 - 300 XR Di BY 1:3.5-6.3 (IF) Macro for £100 and only had to travel to the next town over to try it out.

                        Happy hunting.

I am certainly happy to buy from Ebay and Hong Kong sellers but would not sell through them, unless they are small value items.
