    New sigma lenses announced

Sigma have just announced a raft of new lenses today ,prices yet to come but the one that interests me the most is a lightweight 100-400is one ,to me if the price is right it will be the ideal summer walk about lens offering light weight and sharpness with close 1.6 mtrs focus ,it's also customisable with the sigma dock .its already been pointed out these lenses would be a perfect match for mirrorless cameras hmmm

Also announced a 135mm f1.8 lens also sounds good

Be better off with the canon Mkll 1-400 Jeff , apparently it`s as sharp as the older 400 prime , and a stop faster than the sigma . I just read the review on the Sigma 500 f4 sport in A.P , apparently it vignettes a little on full frame cameras at certain apertures .

Not sure about the 100-400, looks interesting but to some extent it could compete with the 150-600 especially if the weight is significantly lower.

Less bothered about the Art lenses though - if they're anything like the others they'll be pretty pricey...

I was talking to Steve earlier and we both said that once you have had 500/ 600mm it's hard to go back to 400 .if the sigma bazooka comes in at sub five hundred it's certainly worth a look at

I suspect the Sigma will come in at a price well below the £1999 going price for the Canon, which is already much higher than the Sigma 150 - 600 Sports but gives no better performance at comparable focal lengths.

apparently it vignettes a little on full frame cameras at certain apertures .
If you read enough reviews you discover that all lenses vignette to some extent on full frame at some apertures. The question is whether it's enough to be significant.

Yes, compared to most Sigma and other third party lenses they are. But they are cheaper than the Canon equivalents, often considerably so, and are always at least as good, if not better. Here's a typical quote from Photozone.de about the Art 85 mm F1.4 "If you are a die-hard Canon fan, you probably never questioned whether there were alternatives to the Canon EF 85mm f/1.2 USM L II. Well, it may be time to reconsider now. The Sigma 85mm f/1.4 HSM DG Art is certainly sharper - by far - and the other characteristics aren't really any worse." You can find similar comments on many review sites about any of the Art lenses.

Not sure I believe all that I read in magazines and online reviews , some of those reviews / reviewers are definitely biased . It`s fair to say your paying more for a name to a degree , but I personally believe there is more to it than that . I have never heard of high end prime lenses vignetting on full frame cameras before , must be a well kept secret . Sigma no doubt have upped there game , but they have definitely made some Marmite lenses in the past , I will be shocked if that new sigma 400 zoom can match the mk11 Canon , and retain the value and longevity of the canon .

                    Re: New sigma lenses announced

I've always found Photozone.de and other similar sites to be totally unbiased, they will praise or criticise lenses from any manufacturer as the results of their tests require.

I have never heard of high end prime lenses vignetting on full frame cameras before , must be a well kept secret
There are loads of examples, try this for one :

                    and this :

Both expensive "L" lenses. They're not unusual, normal in fact, of course wide angle lenses will show more vignetting than longer focal lengths. You'll find similar results for many lenses, it's essentially impossible to make a wide angle lens that doesn't show a fair degree of vignetting at wide apertures, it's down to the laws of physics just like diffraction at smaller apertures. Also, it's relatively easy to correct in processing.

I will be shocked if that new sigma 400 zoom can match the mk11 Canon , and retain the value and longevity of the canon
                    .
The Sigma 150 - 600 mm Contemporary presently has a street price (not grey stock) of £699. The new 100 - 400 only has the same apertures and a smaller focal length range so is sure to be cheaper, possibly about £500, which would be about a quarter of the Canon lens. So it might not be as good, and a stop narrower, but everyone has to decide if any difference is worth the extra money, you pay your money and you take your choice. Fortunately the choice these days is excellent.

Sigma has definitely upped their game, they used to be known only for the cheap and cheerful, but that's no longer the case. There's really no such thing as a bad lens these days, unlike the past when lemons were common. Oddly, the best value at the low end is now from Canon, with the IS STM lenses. I buy lenses, new or used, from whichever manufacturer offers what I need at the best price.

If you look here: http://www.photozone.de/canon_eos_ff there is a set of reviews of Canon and other lenses. I did a spot check and two of the short lenses - IIRC a 28mm and 35mm - all had reported signs of vignetting while the 400L comment was that "Vignetting is not an issue even on a full format body. " which doesn't say there's no vignetting, just that it's not a problem. Photozone is a pretty thorough and reputable review site as far as I know.

It's worth bearing in mind that if you check the box in LR, and presumably PS as well, to adjust for lens characteristics, any vignetting will be removed by the software so it may be there, you just never see it...

Well it will be interesting to see what photozone say about the sigma 400 in this case then , as I am not in the market at the moment to buy anything new , due to lack of funds I wont be buying either in the foreseeable future , I will still be shocked if the sigma works out as good or more surprisingly better though . If I had the money I would still go for the Canon , as said you pays ya money and makes ya choice . Cant say I have noticed any vignette on my 400 prime or 300 , with or without converters , but I am seldom close enough not to need some cropping , that maybe why .

A long focal length prime lens will have less vignetting problems than a zoom or short focal length, probably not enough to ever notice in real world conditions. Issues such as vignetting, corner to corner sharpness and distortion are mainly of concern to photographers specialising in subjects such as landscape, architecture and interiors who want to compose in camera and not crop so that they can make very large prints.
