I have an 800mm f5.6 L lens. I bought it used and it was a bit tatty, but optically spot on and I have been very pleased with the images.
There were nicks and scratches all over the lens, especially the foot, but a day with the proper touch-up paint, a 0000 sable brush and an airbrush brought it back to pristine condition. I purchased a Lenscoat and a Camo weatherproof cover to keep it in that condition.
That only left the lens mount ring and the weather seal to replace. As you can see from the photo, the previous owner wasn't that gentle when mounting the lens to the body and the weather seal is ripped in many places and the mount ring has been graunched through the plating to the brass in places. A friend had an EF lens that was broken and well beyond economic repair, so he gave it to me so I could use the mount ring, which was in perfect condition. I took the ring off the busted lens, which was good practice before I tackled my 800mm and then went to work. Unfortunately there was a difference between the two mount rings. There were three extra holes drilled sideways into the ring to hold a baffle, that wasn't present on the broken lens. So, remove the ring, replace the new weather seal and replace the original lens mount.
Not quite as successful as I would have hoped, but I now know how to replace a mount ring and weather seal. The new weather seal is now fitted and two of the four mount screws which were a tad loose are now correctly tightened. I shall now order the correct mount ring.
