    EF 24-105 f4 L USM - Error Code 1

Actually got out for some serious image making this week and ran into a problem.

Using this lens on my trusty 6D yesterday I turned from landscape to portrait - grip side down (I know but I'm left handed!).
Got Error Code 001 - Clean contacts between lens & camera.

Turning back to landscape, no problem with next few shots but then received code again.
Turning the camera off & on cleared the message & I did some testing (with the card out) and the problem still occurs but very randomly but usually when in portrait mode.

When I got back home I cleaned the lens & camera contacts & tried to replicate the problem on all my other lenses but all worked OK.
The 24-105 still creates the problem randomly.

Before I contact Canon has anyone else experienced this?

IIRC this relates to the ribbon cable. Will need replacing, the cable that is, if that is the case.

I'd also try on another body but suspect the aperture ribbon cable is the issue. 3 figure repair cost!

Thanks for all the advice. Battery out was the first thing I did!
As suggested by Antoeknee I tried the lens on my EOS30 (Film) body and sure enough it eventually locked up.

Looks like a repair job - if anyone's interested I'll let you know how much it's going to cost to repair.

Not seen a price for some time but recall £100 being cost. Probably bit more now.

Canon may well do some general maintenance at the time too.

That's right - it suffers from lens creep so they can fix that as well !

Update on my 24-105 f4 L repair as promised.

Canon replaced the Power Diaphragm Assembly and a rubber seal. Additionally they re-calibrated the lens, cured the zoom creeping and gave it a good clean.
                Total Cost was £147.

Repair took 1 week and UPS took 5 days to deliver having 'accidently sent it to the wrong location' !

That sounds quite reasonable to me Bob especially as the alternative would have been a new lense at a considerably higher cost. I bet you’re glad to have it back.

That was my thoughts too, I think I may send my copy to Canon for a service even though I don't have the error showing. As it seems the price you paid is a reasonable price.

Not sure whether they do a fixed price service but they do give discounts for CPS members. Worth looking into especially if you own a couple of bodies and a few lenses.
