    Senior moment…or lightbulb moment?

I think I’ve concluded that the 50mm focal length is the only one that will give a normal (to the eye) relationship of foreground and background size in any photo….irrespective of sensor size. Thus if you use a crop sensor you can’t just use a wider lens…that will only correct the field of view…to get the correct foreground/background relationship you’d have to use a 50mm and accept a smaller field of view. If you move back with a crop body and 50mm you restore the foreground/background relationship but of course DoF will be different….Am I right?

Of course you are Brian, said he that as long as he gets a picture of what he see's, it matters not what is on the front of the camera.

I am no surprised that you haven't realised this before as magazines and manufacturers often talk such gibberish like stating lens to be equivalent to X in full frame. the focal length of a lens is a fixed scientific fact, the perspective view and the DOF are fixed by the focal length the sensor size merely affects the field of view. That's why I have always used full frame cameras as for portraits, DOF is a critical factor..
