Pro 9000 Front tray printing

I have a Canon Pixma pro 9000 printer. I have no problems using the auto sheet feeder but run into trouble using the front tray. I follow the instructions in the user guide to the letter and can load the paper without any trouble but when I press print an error message comes up on the PC screen telling me to return the front tray to printing position when the tray is already in this position. I have tried numerous times and always with the same result. I usually resort to using the auto feeder with success but now I wish to print on A3 paper using the front feeder. What am I doing wrong?
