    Canon 6d/7d mk11

Hi all. I am currently using a 70d which I like very much. But low light use is very noisy. I have been toying with the idea of upgrading to the 6d. Meant to be fantastic image quality and all but 1 of my lenses will fit. What's peoples opinions on the 6d? Is there a mk11 due out or is the 7dmk11 any good in low light?
I have been to local shop to have a play with both but wanted to see what you all thought. After all you are the people using them and not just trying to sell me a camera.
Any advice would be appreciated. Many thanks.
    Nick.

I suppose it all depends what type of photography you do as each camera will have its own benefits, if its just for less noise at higher ISO the 6D would be the obvious choice.

Like Paul said. It really depends on what your style of photography. Both are very good cameras for low light photography

having had and used a plethora of cameras this might help ,recently my beloved 1Dmk 3 broke and it was a uneconomic repair as the spares will cease after july'16 ,i was faced with a replacement ,i have had a 40,50,60 and 70d in the past also a 7d and used my lads 7dmk2 for testing none of them had good low light ,useable noise sensors .the canon 1d4 even secondhand was above my price range ,so after a bit of reading up and looking in depth at reviews i decided to take a chance on the new 80d .

all i can state is i,m over the moon ,the new 24mp sensor is a mile away from the 70d it gives a 24 shot RAW buffer at 7fps ,the a/f is more than adequate (though not up to 1d standards) and certainly fast enough for birds in flight ,now down to the nitty gritty of noise ,well canon seem to have done something magical with this sensor i have shot lots of birds in dark shaded places and there is no apparent noise in the images once processed properly ,the highest i have so far needed to go was on a wren at 5000 iso and i have published that in the birding section ,i,m quite sure the camera will go way above that if pushed just not found the need yet .

so take a look at the new 80d you will be pleasantly surprised and won't have to sell any lenses either

here you go wren at 5000 iso hand held .taken in dark woodland

This +1. The 7d2, 6d and 80d target very different markets. I'd decide which market your in and get a camera that suits that...

I have a 6d and use it often for low light photography esp in church and for concerts. To my mind it is a brilliant camera. Take a look at these two pics taken without flash at an Aled Jones concert last month and one in the Cathedral.

with the 6D mk II on the horizon I wouldn't get the 6D is your consideration, but like Paul said it all depends what type of photography you do

Thanks for your replies. I should of said that its for night time shots. Milky Way, star trails and attaching to a telescope. I love the 70d but it does pick up a lot of noise. It would also be used for landscapes, and car shows. I quite fancied a 5d mk3 but bit out my price range at the moment. I might hang out to see if a 6d mk11 arrives. Nick.

Are we talking about high ISO noise or long exposure noise here?

High ISO noise results from the need to amplify the captured signal in order to generate one the processor can work with reliably. Long exposure noise results from spurious signals generated by the sensor as it heats up in operation. Fortunately, and unlike high ISO noise, this noise is consistent from shot to shot and can be filtered out.

If you are experiencing long exposure noise there is an option in the custom functions to activate the Long Exposure Noise Reduction function (probably in one of the sections related to exposure). If you turn this on the camera automatically takes a second exposure with the shutter closed and subtracts this noise from that on the image before saving. The process is known as dark slide compensation and similar methods are used by dedicated astrophotographers - who also often use specialised cameras with cooled sensors - as they often have exposures running into hours.

Long exposure NR generally works best with base ISO images where random signal noise is at a minimum. How much difference a camera with good high ISO performance makes to long exposure or fixed, noise I'm not sure but I imagine that they may operate at lower energy levels and take longer to heat up thus generating less fixed noise to remove. The downside of long exposure reduction is that it effectively doubles the length of the exposure (one proper + 1 dark). On the upside most cameras can be left to only use long term NR on exposures of 1 second or more. It does work too, I have done long exposure with it turned off and on and the 'off' pictures were awful while the on versions were fine...

                      Re: Canon 6d/7d mk11

It's worth bearing in mind that the long exposure noise reduction will take a same length shot which for star trails isn't a good thing as typically your 20-30 second exposures will show gaps given you want to be shooting for an hour or so.

                        Re: Canon 6d/7d mk11

A simple fact. The 6D's full frame sensor is 2.6 times the size of the 7D MkII and therefore each individual photo diode will be larger as the pixel count is identical for the two cameras. Accordingly the ability of the larger photo diodes to gather light is improved and, therefore, both the ISO performance and noise levels are better.

Comparing these cameras is like comparing apples with bananas. One is designed for speed and the other not. If you photograph action and also require a fast burst rate, choose the 7D if you don't well you can work it out. I regularly judge photographs at my Club and as a result I do see the differences between cameras. If you want high dynamic range and low noise then go buy a Sony or a Nikon as they both out perform Canon in that respect. BTW I don't have either a Sony or a Nikon but a 5D MkIII and a 5D Mk IV so my comments are unbiased.

I have just changed my 6D for a 7D2 and I am very pleased indeed with the 7S2.

For example I get: much sharper pictures

                          - better focus with 65 points
                          - more focus area choices, from 1 point to 1/3 of the screen (plaus the whold screen)
                          - 2 speed fast ( which I have set at 5fps and 10fps)
                          - 2 memory cards

Oh - I have also added the extra batter pack for the flash - so it is now running at 5fps with flash :-)
