    Black and White Black Five

45212 on the Cathedrals Express return working from Paignton

Black and White Black Five by John Leah, on Flickr

The weather was a bit dull and overcast and I thought this mono conversion worked better than the colour original (also on Flickr).

    Cheers,
    John

Steam always looks good in mono and this is no exception.

Nice angle ….I must say the steam looks a bit black....maybe I'm too used to looking at industrial emissions.

It looks like she's pushing on up a gradient which means the engine is working hard and that tends to pull a lot of extra smoke from the fire...

              Thanks Brian

Yes it was working hard as it's a steep climb from a standing start at Paignton a mile down the line and, not only did it have a rake of coaches but also the dead weight of a Class 37 diesel to drag so not a bad performance for a class 5. The firemen do need to pour the coals on to ensure there's plenty of steam on tap in readiness for the long ascent ahead.

              Cheers,
              John
