    Camera Insurance??

    Hi, everyone.

Just been reorganising my camera bag and realised how much kit I have.
Has anyone any thoughts on insurance to cover theft and accidental damage.

I've spoken to the NFU who do my house contents insurance, but I'm not convinced that they will be able to offer the cover I need when away from home.

    Any advice appreciated.

its quite frightening when you consider the money we cart around in these backpacks and if anyone knows the hobby will soon see will loaded one!

I pay a silly amount of money to cover my kit in Spain 980 euros a year !! and wish I could find a UK equivalent but can't. I'm pretty sure on the EOS shop page here there is a link for a UK insurance company and I would defiantly get something separate set up rather than tagging into house contents, as often these have single limit items that could easy go past a decent lens

      Hi, Tigger,
Thanks for your reply. Just one of my "L" series lenses is over their single item limit!

yep thats the problem, my recent wide angle goes past the limit and like you thats just one item

I hope like me you've taken photos of your kit as a collection and separately plus serial numbers

Mine is with these guys, but beware when renewal comes around, i added an EF500mm L lens and they put up the premium horrendously, I then did a check on their free quote on the link below and it was less, so I replied to the email for the renewal and quoted the quote, they dropped it to that, so it cost me less than without the lens... go figure

Mine is on house contents and that includes foreign travel and cover in the car. All kit over £1,000 is serial numbered and it even includes my 200-400 F4L IS 1.4x, which is not a cheap lens.

I tried quotes from the specialist photographic insurers and it was far more expensive.

Thanks, everyone for your replies and information.

I have listed all my equipment and intend to have an "in-depth" discussion with my house contents insurers tomorrow. It will be interesting to hear what they can offer.

House insurance for me as well , I just had to itemize anything over £500 I think it was , each itemized piece cost a little extra on top . Check it covers everything you want it to , I feel insurance companies are more slippery than an Eel these days , and if they can get out of coughing up , they will .

Everything serial end on my insurance except the Really Right Stuff, and I have lots of it, though it is listed, when you add those up it becomes frightening, a lot of it is stupid prices, but end of the day you pay for what you get. The mention of photographing everything had never crossed my mind, until mentioned here and I will have to get it done, I also really need to get shot of some stuff I am doubled up on and I do not use anymore, mk1 100-400L, panoramic mount etc

                      Re: Camera Insurance??

Following on from my post yesterday, I called in at my local NFU office today. I have had house insurance with them for years. I took along a list, including serial numbers where appropriate, of all the gear I take with me on a landscape photography trip. They suggested what I needed, I asked some questions, they answered them clearly and concisely. It was all done in about 10 minutes! I increased the personal items cover on my house contents insurance which increased the single item limit. Everything is now covered, including my backpack and tripod. The single item limit would now cover a new 6D MkII body if this were necessary.
The total cost of the increase is nothing, until my renewal date in May, then an extra £9 per year! A bargain for peace of mind.
I am sure that many of you will be aware of the foregoing. I just thought I would share my experience for anyone in similar circumstances.

                        Camera Insurance??

                        Tyke.

Quick question. Although the single item limit is increased, is there a maximum claim limit for being away from home.

Eg. You might be covered for single items up to £2500 each, but you take 2 bodies at £2k each, 3 lenses at £1.5k each, lens at £2.5k. And the bag goes missing. Is there a max claim limit of £7.5k for example meaning not everything would get covered then?

Or is it unlimited away from home cover?

Does it also cover if away on business. I like to take my camera with me when away with work (not photography related work).

                            Hi, Bhuna.
                            Thank you for your question.
I have increased my total limit to cover all my kit when away from home and the single item limit would cover my 6D body, my single most expensive item. Business use does not apply to me as I am now enjoying my retirement. Doesn't appear to be a lot of extra time for photography though!
My kit is covered when in my car, provided the car is locked and any theft showed evidence of "forced entry".
Thanks to everyone for your valuable input.
