I have my 550D and my wife is my constant companion on photographic trips. She had a compact, but I dropped it in the river when Salmon fishing and was trying to photograph an Otter swimming by.
So instead of another compact we went for a 1100D,similar controls to my 550 and of course the added bonus of being able to share lenses.
I've had a bit of a go,difficult that some functions are in different places, but it's a great light simple camera that fits the bill and the budget(skint- see 100 -400 lens review to see why!)
It lacks the HD video facility, but other than that it really is a good camera, hooked up with a 17-85 f4-5.6 IS USM lens she's taking some cracking shots with it.
