1D Mk IV plus points over 7D

I use a 7D for wildflife, mainly. Very happy with 7D but have a yearning for a 1D Mk IV now prices have droppped a bit. Low light (outdoor) capabilities are a major influence

Just wondering if I'd miss the apparent "reach" of the 1.6 x crop going to 1.3x. Will I have a bit more to crop from the 1D results? I cannot justify a longer lens, I am maxed out with a 300 2.8IS plus 1.4 & 2 x extenders.

Any hands on experience you can share would be appreciated.

Low light is at least 1 stop better than the 7D with usable shots up to iso 12800

AF is faster, more points, more options

    Crop reach is less

Bracketing is +/- 3 up to 7 shots

    10fps instead of 8

    Flash sync 1/300

    AF up to f/8

    flash bracketing

2 cards, one CF one SD

plus a bunch of minor stuff

I recently went in the opposite direction - going from a 1D3 to a 7D.
I can't afford the more expensive lenses, ie 500 f4
The 7D meets all my requirements - cropped sensor giving "more reach" with tele lenses, good IQ with more scope to crop, relatively fast fps and quite a bit lighter.
The one thing I do miss is the feel of the one series, Oh and the sound of the shutter tripping - ORGASMIC!!

Mind you, the 1D4 is a different ball game all together.
I tried one when it first came out and was blown away with the quality etc

You can always crop the final image and acheive almost precisely the same result. All the crop does is to not collect part of the available field of view.

          Hi Hugh,

The very simple answer is everything about the 1D iv is superior - as you'd expect from the flagship camera. I own both camera bodies & the 1D iv is the camera body of choice. It usually has a 300mm f2.8 on the front. I also use both the x1.4 TC & x2 TC. As for the price drop - not seen much evidence of that - still £500 more expensive than when I bought mine this time last year.

I agree with Sam re the sound the shutter makes - iit is pretty damn good! I've had quite a few people say what a great sound & then asked what camera I've got.

          TTFN,

The 7D is a Jaguar ............ a thoroughbred in its own right, but the 1D MKIV is a Aston Martin.

            Nuff said.

                I would have said a Caterham 7 against a Porche 910

Thanks for the comments, and for reminding me that I drive a VW and regret forever selling my Healey 3000 MkIII.

Need to a bit more convincing of myself, before I raise the subject with the main breadwinner in the house.

Colin, do you use a 1D Mk IV ?

Colin, not been on the site for a while. Just browsing other posts and see that the above question is redundant.

An interesting difference is Mulimetering where you can choose any points (to a max of 8) be to used for metering - which for example means you meter on the sea and the sky and ignore the land Or pick several people in a group shot

You could always hire a 1Dmk4 for 3 days for around £100 or look for a more competitive 7day rate.

It would either 'kill the craving' or convince you to buy
