    Flickr / 500px

    Hi

I've been using my Flickr account to post images to this forum, but they appear to be softer than the originals on my PC! I have now opened an account at 500px, and I would appreciate some feedback on the 2 pictures below... Is there a great difference, or any difference between them, as far as you can see?

I appreciate the the pictures above are not shown in the same size, so I would also appreciate some advice on whether I need to resize to 800 wide BEFORE I post to 500px, or whether there is a resizing option in 500px I should be using.

I appreciate your assistance. All the best, Mike.

I'm not sure if it's due to the difference in image size posted, but 500px looks brighter and sharper than Flickr. BTW, have you tried imgur?

A little sharper on 500px. Most obvious around the snout area, whiskers etc. and I am viewing on an iPad. Not sure about the resizing, don't think you can change in 500 px, have to do it before you upload.

Here's the 500px picture, resized to 800 pixels wide in DPP for comparison.

                  Re: Flickr / 500px

Mike, when I upload to flickr I always resize adjust the quality as I see Flickr as a place for viewing only. At red bubble and 500px you upload the full size, high quality file so that you can sell this in print form. I have always felt the images are better on red bubble and 500px because of this (and this is just my logic here so it carrys a health warning!)
Also I understand every time you save a jpg you introduce unwanted 'artifacts' which are not desired.
So by me saving just once to a full size from my raw format and then posting directly onto red/500 I am reducing any negative effects - loss - by one. Once on red/Flickr/500 a further resize and save must occur to optimise your viewing otherwise you would be waiting longer to view the full size images.
                  Does this make any sense?

I have just finished reviewing my 500px site and will be doing the same to my red bubble site too.

Oh and why do I have these other sites? Well Flickr is great and I place most of items there inluding pictures i share with family on the other side of the world using the sites security. The other two sites I use to show off the work I am most pleased with. A little piece of web vanity. :)

Hope this adds a little to the discussion.

TBH - I can't see much difference, but it will be interesting to see what you all think!

                    Cheers, Mike.

                        Re: Flickr / 500px

Thanks Treff - TBH, I can't see much difference between the posted images either, so I'll have to assume I might be doing something wrong in PP... strange, as I haven't noticed it until fairly recently, but I have changed nothing!

I may work on the same image, and try different settings, and see what appears to be posted to Flickr, and 500px, then I'll post examples and see if the difference is in the 'posting' process, but I suspect it's not this forum, as other people's shots are OK!

                        Cheers all. Mike.

                          Re: Flickr / 500px

I find using Flickr my pics always appear over sharpened when posted here, even when no sharpening as been applied.
Yer can't trust them damn pixels.

Mike, I can't see any differnce.

For total control you could just register your own domain name and pay for hosting with sufficient bandwidth.

I personlly wouldn't use 500PX for promotion, cos within 2 clicks my potential clients are looking at the work of talented photographers.
My snaps can't hold up to that kind of comparison.
