    Re: Mk 4

Just noticed it's discontinued !!! Is it just me, or did that camera have a relatively short time as a current model ?

Extremely short 'life' but I can't help thinking that Canon have missed out on a great thing by discontinuing the 1.3 crop sensor - best of both worlds if you know what I mean.

Am with you here David - don't pretend to know how CAnon think but would be surprised if they don't have an APS-H version of the 1Dx sensor in development - the 1D3 & 1D4 were such good sellers and a staple of the wildlife photography brigade that I'd have though such a camera would fly off the shelves. No doubt I'm completely wrong!

The 1.3x crop sensor was introduced in 2001 with the EOS 1D. It was needed to give a relatively fast continuous shooting speed - 8fps - for professional news and sports photographers. The larger amount of data generated by a full-frame sensor took longer to handle with the processors of the time. The full-frame EOS 1Ds introduced in 2002 only offered 3fps.

Now that the full frame EOS 1D X with Dual DIGIC 5+ processors can provide up to 14fps, the 1.3x sensor is no longer needed. I would be very surprised to see it in any future EOS cameras.

Not an argument I want to go into so I think we can agree to disagree on this one. (even though the 1.3 crop is better)

              Hi Guys,

I feel Canon should've kept the 1D iv going. The 1.3 crop is sometimes very useful and also the price. It's still a damn good camera and at nearly 2 grand less than the 1DX makes it very competitive, price wise. I think the 1DX might be out of a lot of peoples price range, whereas the 1D iv might just be in. Either way, I'm glad I have one in my kit, to back up the 1DX

Well that leaves a large 'hole' in the price point ladder between 5D3 and 1DX ... so one does wonder what's going to fill the vacancy.

Happen a new version of the 1.3 sensor will appear in the 7D lineage.

To be honest I think it would be a shame if they didn't but hey ho, just have to raid the piggy bank for the 1DX!

Just seen a 'mint' mk4 for sale at CameraWorld in Chelmsford for 2600 - Bargain if someone is after one, don't think it will be there for long.
