    Re: New flasher

Thanks for taking the time to write that. More to ponder.

      New flasher

I've just had a quick look at the Yongnuo 468's spec, and it is E-TTLii compatible on-camera (and so will be via a cord or 622c) so that may be a reasonable inexpensive investment

Thanks for that. I thought I'd read it that way but it's not completely obvious without any experience. I watched the Strobist posts to get a bit of an idea on the subject.

Wireless appeals only as I would like to try and light objects possibly in landscapes more than people so the range helps. But I'm sure it'll all help kill many hours!

Flash is a fascinating and underestimated technique, it's use can make an image or make day into night, midday into the golden hour, or winter into summer. Time spent reading up on technique won't be wasted!

I'd rather stick to Canon and would suggest the 430EX ii. One must have trouble free flash shooting all the time.

Nat I'm sure that's a great flash but given I hope to change my body and get at least 1 lens that's a lot of extra cash to spend on a gun. Added that you need to get a brolly and stand and cable or triggers to go with it. Lots of people seem very happy with Yongnuo gear so I think it makes sense, particularly given I'm not sure I will use it a lot, more an interested dabble.

Wayne, that's something you need to assess for yourself, the pros and cons of marque flash are similar to those for glass. There are compromises to be made, either on monetary terms or performance (the option to choose coverage for even output or peak power for example, High Speed Flash, camera menu control etc etc). Unfortunately whilst the money is obvious at the outset, the other shortcomings don't tend to become obvious until you miss them later on!

As for extras, a good staring point is a Stofen diffuser, off camera cord, a Rogue Flashbender, and a set of gels , total outlay around £70. The umbrella, soft box and stand can come a little later if the bug really bites.

S_J_P thanks for another very useful post.
That light Bender and diffuser seem a lot easier to carry around.
The comments likening it to lens choice is a good analogy. I hadn't equated flash quality in the same way. I will continue to read up but I think whilst the importance of IQ and lens choice is obvious flash is a lot more down to application. So for me, a cheaper unit seems to make sense. Plus if I do get massively into it I can get a better unit and use the first as a fill in/slave.

                    Sound reasoning.
