    503 and flickr

Just tried posting a couple of images for the first time using the BB code (copy/paste) from Flickr and I got the 503 error for the first time I normally post via Photobucket but decided to give Flickr a go as I was getting soft images with Photobucket.

I tried to preview message with the BB code and still got the 503 but as soon as I removed the BB code I could preview my post.

I think this problem must lie with flickr and something to do with the large BB codes.

    Re: 503 and flickr

I use a straight URL and not the BB code from Flickr and still get the 503.

I'm thinking it must be something between the EOS Forum Server(s) in Germany and whatever server my own Photostream is on. There is a delay sometimes which results in a 503??

Robert might try running tracert on farm9.staticflickr.com (which is where my stuff lives) ... but it just seems to affect a scheme of HTTP.

I did not know this was available on the Mac as part of the OS. I've just run it for various URLs. Not sure if this helps.

        Re: 503 and flickr

Robert - you really need to login into your server (telnet) and from there run a tracert to farm9.staticflickr.com. As I think the issue lies between your server and flickr (not between your Mac and the forum or your Mac and Flickr).

However I would be suspicious of that "traceroute to eu-ycpi-uno.aycpi.b.yahoodns.net (87.248.105.221), 64 hops max, 52 byte packets" line which may provide enough delay for your forum software to timeout.

Just been squashed by the 503. Which is now beginning to sound like a species of alien from Dr Who or Startrek Voyager.

Di - do you know which server farm you are actually on in Flickr (mine is farm9 as in farm9.staticflickr.com).

In Flickr - Select any image in any Photostream. Click on Image and then click on "View All Sizes". If you are using Firefox -- right click on the image and select Copy Image Location and paste this in notepad and your see a URL that should look something like farm9.staticflickr.com/8093/8549477326_d1279392e9_b.jpg

So could it be FARM9 is the problem ... we need more people to report.

Robert I should have thought about this earlier ... but was thinking of problems where problems didn't exist ...

I'm FARM9 too. No idea of it's significance, or what it means, but I know I've given up trying to post because of 503.

                          Re: 503 and flickr

I'm guessing that Flickr's static content is distributed over 9 server farms (numbered 1 to 9) ... server farms are just collections of servers (and SANs).

So (again I'm guessing) that the front end processor (flickr) fans out to these farms by using a Yahoo (they own Flickr) DNS. There may be a delay in requests from the actual forum server when calling Flickr (it's looking like Farm9 may be a problem). As others (who suffer 503) report which farm they are on ... dawn may dawn.

Just been back to look at what I've been able to post in the past and these too where on Farm9.

Is it possible that its a problem that wanders the farms? Does one farm one week and another the next because this is only the second time I've been squashed by the 503, I've been able to post when others have been struggling.

(It's begining to sound like a herd of cattle now)
