    Re: Cannon 100D

Just thinking Nathaniel, any reason for considering the Tamron lens as you already have the 70-200mmf4L & Canon 1.4 iiTC which would give you 280 at the long end? I have the same & usually use it with an old 350D which is pretty small but still balances nicely. The 100D + 16-300 does seem a nice combo if size is the main consideration but IQ wont be quite as good - as you know the 70-200 F4L is razor sharp.

Another alterternative to the 700D if you did want something slightly larger than the 100D might be the 60D - some sites such as Park Cameras still have it new - body for £499 ....

My deal was this. My wife and I used to share a 7D and a 5D2. At times there were situations where I ended up with the wrong camera and lens combination. I finally decided to get my own camera AND...to downsize at the same time.

My first choice would have been an advanced mirrorless, but Canon's EOS-M was lacking, as far as I was concerned. I tried a Metabones adapter on a Sony and found that not totally satisfactory either. During my search I happened to come across the 100D, known here as the Rebel SL1. It seemed like a good stop gap camera to use for a couple years while Canon learns about mirrorless and EVFs. I found that its small size was not a problem, and with the 16-300 Tamron lens, it is a suitable all-purpose camera.

I've had the camera for about two and a half months and the lens for a month and a half. As I've mentioned before, the camera and 16-300 lens together weigh just 2 oz more than the 7D body alone. It's also smaller in every dimension. It is a camera that I carry with me at times that I would otherwise not take a camera. That's a big difference. I've even gone on a couple of outings with the camera and 35mm F2, making it really compact and a nearly pure old time camera experience. I'll tell you, Nathaniel. After two and a half months with the SL1/100D, that 7D feels like a concrete block when I pick it up!

As to weight and balance, it works perfectly with the 16-300, with the Sigma 8-16, the 35F2, and it works equally well on big lenses. I've used it for grandkids' evening softball games and a dance recital with the Canon 300mm F2.8, where my wife says the camera looks like an oversized rear lens cap. It works, though, quite nicely. Balance, my friend, does not require a heavy camera body!

As to alternatives, I would not consider for myself another of the Rebel/nnnD cameras. For me the 100D has everything I want in a take everywhere camera. If I wanted a larger crop camera, it would have to be a 70D...but I don't want a larger crop camera. I've got the same size sensor and 18MP as the larger nnnD cameras and the nnD cameras, and I've got sufficient camera settings to do what I want. This little camera is not for everyone, but it is perfect for me!

        Re: Cannon 100D

Thanks Bill for your detailed post. I should have mentioned that I already have a full frame DSLR- the 6D but I find I have to crop a great deal with my bird pics to get a reasonable size image. A crop camera already gives a fair crop image and hence, according to my thinking, I wouldn't have to do much more cropping using a crop camera. The crop camera would be my second, back up camera body and as I have got EF lenses they would all fit the crop body.

I intend calling round my local camera shop and try out the camera.

Les, I did own a 60D which I sold towards the purchase of my 6D. I am very pleased with the 6D and it is my main camera. However, the only downsize with a FF is that I have to crop my bird pics quite a lot to get to a reasonable size. Hence I thought of once again getting a crop body and use it for wild life pics and it would give me a reach of 448mm with my present 70-200+1.4TC i.e an extra 168mm with a crop body.

I am not looking for a very expensive crop camera like the 70D as my "evisaged" uses would be for wild life and probably for travel, with only one lens like the 16-300mm & my Canon G15 compact

I will look into this in more detail soon.

P.s I must also add that I did own the 350D as my first DSLR, which was very good but I sold it to get my 450D, them sold that to get the 600D, and sold that to get the 60D and then sold that to get the 6D!

            Re: Cannon 100D

The price of the SL1/100D was a big part of the appeal to me. The size was paramount, but money is still a consideration...always. The size, though, can make it easier to take along as a second body, too, when you're using your full frame camera. A second body is nice when you're in conditions that make changing lenses--wind, dust, etc.--not advisable.

That is a valid point Bill- taking a second body on some assignments I do, as a form of insurance.

So, got one in the end ;) First few shots & need to get accustomed to metering - seems to underexpose a little compared to my 40D but IQ superb. no sharpening required on this one:
