    Hopefully Improving

Hi everyone, I've been away from posting for a while as work has gone manic but I've still managed a couple of photo opportunities.

Last week my local camera club organised a studio shoot where we had a few minutes of shooting with a couple of models. It's quite hard in getting everything right in the short space of time allocated but i'm happy with the results and hopefully I'm improving a little.

I'm still don't find it easy working with models telling them what poses I want etc.. a bit of stage fright I think, but the more I keep doing this I suppose It will come easier.

On another note I recently have turned 40 and my better half has just ordered my first piece of 'L' glass can't wait!!

Here is a couple of shots taken on the night.

Nicely done, especially number 2. It's not easy working for just a couple of minutes at a time, especially when other members just want you to hurry up so they can have their turn.

You have a warm colour cast on number 1, which is easily corrected. On number 2, you have taken the shot slightly higher than the model, which makes her look a little short. Normal practice would be to shoot at her eye level, or if it is for her portfolio, shoot slightly lower to make her appear taller. Hands are always difficult in portraits and the prop in 2 has dealt with that nicely.

You are improving and getting more confident and as you have already suggested, the more you do the better you will get. I will try and make the time to write a post about working with and getting the best out of models if that will help.

I don't really know anything about this subject but the second shot looks great to me so nice of Colin to help with the height thing.

The first one I think the girl on the right's pose is a bit face on bodywise. I used to socialise with a group of professional dancers, many of whom did promotional and modelling work. Whenever a camera appeared, even a phone in a pub, they'd always stand at an angle and pop a knee. They always said it made them look better.

        Keep up the good work.

Thanks Wayne these were the first 2 I processed, I have some more which I will post shortly in different poses.
I know what you mean about the height thing, will try and get that right next time.

Nicely done on both, would concur with Colin's assessment and I think image 2 is my favorite of the 2.

#2 works well, model looks more relaxed and the prop adds to the interest.

                      Re: Hopefully Improving

Prefer no 2 too. I think another consideration for me is that with a single model you get a direct link back to the camera, but with two models if they are concentrating on the camera they are not interacting together, so it looks a bit more false. That said, I've never taken any studio pics, so what do I know?
But I'd also be interested in Colin's thoughts on working with models as I'm sure much of that would also translate into more general portraiture.

                        Thanks Paul,Paul & Alex,

It was a problem getting the girls relaxed as they are only young and trying to find poses that looked natural.
It would have helped if I was relaxed too but was intimidating for everyone with 10 photographers there.
I'm looking forward to Colins Post.

Well I'm a complete amateur and to my eye they both look fantastic so no doubt you models will think the same. It's always great to get a pro's view though so am watching Colin's posts with interest and trying to take it all in :)

                          Very well done.

I like #2 Chris. It's nicely composed, and the focus is excellent. I find working with models (amateur or professional) incredibly difficult, so I admire you for that too. Keep up the good work!
