Can anyone assist please?, I have a 40d and a YN560-III which wont fire on the camera. The camera's menu settings say it's either turned off or not compatible? I just wanted a flash to use on camera at this stage but I am confused as to how to get it to work with the camera. Any suggestions or do I have the wrong sort of flash unit here? Thanks in anticipation. I am a complete flash novice as you might have guessed.

Re: YN560-III
As far as I'm aware the YN 560 is a completely manual flash, so besides the camera triggering it, everything else is controlled from the flash itself (and not the camera, hence your inability to set the flash from the camera menu). If you look at the flash shoe which attaches to the camera you'll see just a single connection, auto flash guns will have multiple communication connections.
Attach the flash to the camera and power it on, you should see the flash thunderbolt icon in the viewfinder, select a shutter speed less than your maximum sync speed (1/125 for example) then manually set the 560 to something like 1/32 power, and try taking some snaps. Adjust the power up/down depending on the foreground exposure, and adjust the background exposure by changing the shutter speed. That should work.Steve's kit - Canon 6D/EG-D/BG-E13/60D/EF-D/BG-E9/600 EX-RT/17-40L/24-105L/40/100L/70-200L/70-300/2x iii/Sigma 8-16/Yongnuo YN-568EX (x2)/YN560EX II/YN622C-TX/YN622C (x4)
