I bought one of those John. Not as awkward to use as the Canon version, but still a bit of a pain.

I suspect I looked a bit of an idiot in the kitchen shop, armed with the lens hood, trying different Tupperware style lids, but I found one that fitted fairly quickly. It also fitted in the pocket of my jacket, so in operation, slip it off and into the pocket, shoot what I need and slip it back on. So convenient and only a couple of quid or so.

Mrs C was so impressed we didn't have to take out a second mortgage, for yet another piece of photographic equipment she didn't feel I needed!

Good idea Colin ,I use a stretch on plastic one from grazina designs (Trevor hannant) it simply slips over the lens hood like a shower cap

Thanks, my interest was in the likes of big stoppers, little stoppers etc and a combination based on those with grad's, which I don't think the article covered?

As for hoods on long lenses I use one of these

Though I have just sourced a cheap MK2 one for my 500 f4 MK1, so hopefully it will fit. I also use disposable shower caps, they are great, cost me pence on ebay for 100 and can be used on the camera body as well if it rains while taking up no room at all in my bag, heck you can even put them on your head, and Stan suggested on your feet for mud..

Rather unsurprisingly it was fantastic with aircraft at a distance but they very quickly overflowed the frame and trying to catch an 'Arrows crossover with a 500 was just impossible ...
One of the main reasons why I don't want to replace my 100-400 with a 400 prime. Although it is almost constantly at full reach for birds & wildlife, for aircraft it's a completely different ball-game!

8hrs of flying displays with a 500mm f4 (with x1.4) handheld on sunday at RIAT and survived (i keep elbows into my chest to support the weight) - still considering what shots to delete and what I really want to keep :-)

I do the same Dave, with all tracking movement coming from the waist. Back muscles are long term stamina muscles, whereas biceps and triceps are short term power muscles. Brace the arms against the chest and use the back muscles by swivelling at the waist and you can keep going for hours. Just use you arms and they ache within minutes.

No way I could hand hold a 500 for much more than about 10-15 minutes but obviously using wrong technique as I used my arms to take the weight rather than elbows against chest. Think I am destined to remain a tripod guy ...

I use a monopod on it, takes all the strain, with a mono head and pano head, so it tilts and pans and does not fall over sideways.

This is the set up I use on my monopod that someone is using on a tripod in link below, I also prefer it on my tripod as a ball is less precise, though I have a gimbal now for that. Great set up in hides when mounted on the monopod.

                      more on it here

That one bit of RRS equipment has cost me thousands as I added to it.. It was the thing that got me started on buying their equipment.

I have seen your use of home made tupperware lens caps when we met in Slimbridge some years ago- you with your two large lenses dangling from your waist, like a bongo player!!!!! They certainly were very effective.

He has, I have bought a Lee holder and mount, also I have purchased a graduated ND filter (just one so far) to try, A big stopper for water and also a set of 5 secondhand but new soft grads of various colours, a coral, sky blue, straw, tobacco and mahogany, all of strength 2, Which I hope will be good for landscapes, I am working on the premises that if I don't like I should get my monies back. I have been buying the odd one over a couple of months.
I still want 2 more ND grads, a coral stripe and a 105mm polariser.
