I bought one of those John. Not as awkward to use as the Canon version, but still a bit of a pain.
I suspect I looked a bit of an idiot in the kitchen shop, armed with the lens hood, trying different Tupperware style lids, but I found one that fitted fairly quickly. It also fitted in the pocket of my jacket, so in operation, slip it off and into the pocket, shoot what I need and slip it back on. So convenient and only a couple of quid or so.
Mrs C was so impressed we didn't have to take out a second mortgage, for yet another piece of photographic equipment she didn't feel I needed!
