Lovely autumnal colours in the first, Andy, and it looks like you took the time to use a tripod as its nice and sharp.
Not sure why you would have used HDR on it, though, and frankly it doesn't look a if you have (which is good) whereas the 2nd is less sharp and appears to me to have been processed with HDR, even though I see that you said it hasn't - look at the clouds, trees and water.
