    Lens Cap

Anyone that uses big telephoto's will be aware that the all encompassing sock design of the lens cap may be quite useful for transporting it safely, but not much good as a day to day lenshood.

So I go into the Pound shops with my lens hood and look through the food containers until I find a lid that fits. Brilliant solution and only costs £1. One downside is that they are transparent/opaque and in the heat of the moment I often put it down to take some shots and sometimes have a job to find it, especially if I have moved on in the taking of those shots.

With my new zoom, I thought I would rectify that problem and armed with my £1 lens cap, a can of £5 plastic spray paint and £2 Canon vinyl decals, I have lens cap MKII. At £8 not cheap, but much less expensive than Can's £200 version.

Painting big telephoto's white is technically a good idea. Light colours reflect heat, keeping them working cooler, meaning less expansion, keeping the lens sharp and working within tolerance. For the wildlife photographer, you can also see where you left your lens ........... unless you are in the arctic photographing Polar Bears, Doh! The downside is that in any normal environment, white stands out and wildlife recognise it as an unusual object to be wary of. Also the white paint chips rather easily.

These Lenscoats come in a variety of camouflage effects and colours and they are material bonded to neoprene, so apart from their blending in properties, they also insulate the lens and protect it. The same company do an outer coat, where the neoprene is three times as thick, to protect during transportation.

Hey, it needs to come off the lens, not be stuck on permanently!
