Canon printer ink cartridges- Pixma 37/38 & Pixma 40/41

I have a Canon MX300 printer and the ink cartridges are the Pixma 40 & 41 and also the Pixma 37 & 38. I buy re-filled cartridges as they are much cheaper and suits my purpose.( I also have a Samsung ML 2165 laser printer for "heavy" work- i.e report writing). I find that the Canon cartridges do not last long and I wonder whether this is because I use re-filled cartridges, bought via Ebay OR because I sometimes leave the printer switched on for long periods to prevent callers disturbing me whilst I am doing some work. This Canon MX300 also has got a Fax etc which is also connected to my main phone line. I do not know whether my leaving the printer switched on for long periods sometimes approx 2 hours, is somehow drying up the printer cartridge ink.

    Any ideas on this?

    Thank you.

    Interesting question.

My gut feeling is that your former assumption is most likely. I've always believed the "self-test" printers go through when you turn them on uses ink, so by leaving it on, it strikes me you'd actually use less ink. I guess it depends how the printer behaves when it's "idle" (i.e. turned on but not printing) and if it does some kind of test routine when you wake it up to print.

I don't think it's beyond the bounds of belief to think the manufacturers' cartridges have less ink than 3rd-party ones - after all, they must make a LOT more money selling cartridges than the printers themselves.

Bit of a thorny issue. A while ago a computer mag did some tests to determine ink used in cleaning.

One printer used more than 70% in the test whilst the best used only 18%.

Leaving the printer on shouldn't dry out the carts. Canon carts seen to be relatively small capacity, I have a MG6150.

As to the differences between 3rd party and OEM there are lots of reasons for using one or the other. 3rd party is predominately cost, OEM will be consistency and permanency.

Roberto, (i) By my "former assumption" are you referring to 3rd party cartridges? (ii) When I turn on the printer and also when I print after the printer being switched on for say 2 hrs, the self test does take place. But I don't think, these self tests should deplete the cartridges so quickly.I haven't experienced this before till I started leaving the printer switched on. Because this printer and fax etc is connected to my main telephone line, callers who ring me, get the "engaged" tone and so they quickly put their phone down or leave a message.

              look here http://www.cityinkexpress.co.uk/ciss...x300/mx-series

The only drawback is that the printer lid needs to be open slightly and the ink reservoir sits at the side of the printer

Thanks Alex. I understand now, and perhaps this might be cost effective in the long run.

Got to say these bulk ink systems were one of the most unreliable and messy things we ever tried at the school where I worked.

Having considered everything, I have bought another set of ink cartridges. Let me see how long they last. Thanks for all your advice

I thought I must mention that the ink cartiridges I bought around 25th Feb has again run out, just after a month. I have not done much printing- either colour or black as I use my Samsung Laser printer (black) for most of my printing. I am now wondering whether I should go in for the so called bulk ink systems?

Thank you Jeff. Thats a great help. I will take you up on that. Will contact you via PM to fix a date etc.
Also, will be pleased to pick your brains re photography and any possible place to visit- not too far out. This is of course secondary to the printer cartridges.
