    A look inside the Uk's High Energy Synchrotron, Harwell.

    Hi,
    Taken yesterday at Harwell, Oxfordshire. The High Energy Synchrotron was on 'shut down - so it was safe to have a look inside. Electrons moving at just a small fraction below the speeed of light (186,000 miles per second) are subjected to strong magnetic fields which causes them to emit synchroton radiation. I just loved the warning signs - if a fire alarm goes off you must leave the buliding, if a radiation glaxon goes off close all windows and doors and remain inside, if both go off at the same time 'Try Praying !'.

        Hi James; that's impressive, amazing, and potentially scary... Try Praying

        I guess it must work on a similar basis to the Large Hadron Collider at CERN in Switzerland???
        Cheers;

          Hi,
          No - the one at CERN has two beams going in opposite directions which when they collide reveals something about the sub atomic structure of matter - of interest to theoretical physics.
          This device has a beam only going one way and is designed to produce very intense beams of X-Rays which can be used to investigate how the atoms inside materials is organised - of interest to engineers, biologists, medical research, etc.

            That's good, I've been there for work and it's an impressive site.
