Extending the Canvas II - Jeffs Kite

As requested by Jeff, this is how I extended the canvas on his recent red kite shot. It is similar to the tip i posted a few months back but with the wing feathers right on the top edge, a few additional steps are needed.

Open original image in PS or Elements and duplicate the background

Increase the canvas size with ctrl, alt and C and in the box which appears ensure that the box of arrows at the bottom are pointing upwards and enter an additional 200 pixels for the height and click OK - the colour of the extension is not important

    01.jpg

    02.jpg

Grab the rectangular marquee tool and make selections either side of wings

    03.jpg

Ctrl plus T and grab the top middle handle and pull up to stretch the sky

    04.jpg

Double click within the area and then deselect.

Select the magic wand tool and clikck on the sky until it is all selected and then on the black area until everything is selected apart from the kite - select the clone tool (soft brush and around 100px} and you can now clone within the selected area without affecting the bird

    06.jpg

Now deselect and reduce the brush size to about 10px and hardness 75% to just tidy up the feather which was touching the original edge of the image

Finally crop, flatten and save the image

Re: Extending the Canvas II - Jeffs Kite

Just had a play with PS CC and found another way

Select the crop tool and drag round the whole image, pull the center handle upwards for as much as you need click enter, this should now show an extended canvas

Select the rectangular marquee and drag round only the extended canvas go to edit and in the drop down choose fill, and in the box that appears choose Content Aware and enter

This worked really well on your image but I do not know how to post my effort without putting on my Flickr page which I did not think would be right

Do not know if Content Aware is available in Elements

          Hi James

Thats another way but only if you have PS CC. I checked on my Elements 12 which does have content aware but that option is not available for "fill"
This worked really well on your image but I do not know how to post my effort without putting on my Flickr page which I did not think would be right

I didnt put any of the images on flickr but just uploaded straight from th4e computer as the quality for this section didnt matter
