If the MFT charts are anything to be trusted, this new lens is sharper than the 70-200 2.8 MKII @ 200mm. That is incredible.
Remember the 70-200 chart is for f2.8 and the 100-400 chart for whatever aperture it is at that focal length (f4.5+), if you stopped the 70-200 down I suspect it wouldn't do so well against it. Not that the new 100-400 doesn't have great MTF charts, it really does (it makes the 400/5.6 look pretty poor in comparison, especially once the 100-400 price drops).

This new lens has been rumoured for 2 years and is now a reality. I used the old lens for a while, found it very good optically but a bit slow and cumbersome in use. A new version is welcome. Just a shame that a £1200 lenses has become a £2K lens!

development cost money Gary . I don't think I've ever seen a product launch where the new model was the same price as its predecessor

For Ian and other members that live in lovely sunny conditions this lens would be a dream and one i would definitely have in my camera bag , just a shame most of us live in the dull and dark UK where most of the its use would be just 3/4 months of the year or upon the arrival of the new 5D mk iv with even better ISO performance and i can shoot at iso 25600 producing noise free images

I agree. I just don't have the high-ISO capability to use a 5.6 lens unless it's good/bright light. At least that's the excuse I'm using to refrain getting my CC out ;) lol

actually I had a day off yesterday and headed inland to a little village I'd heard about that had a small castle - left my house on the coast clear skies and a nice day, 3 hrs later pulled into a village wishing I'd taken a coat! - grey, dull and yuck .... but I think I got a few but not taken them off the camera yet

                    Re: Pics of the 100-400mm

Well, I'll let you know how I get on with an f/5.6 after all!
What a range for zooms in the 100-400 from Canon... I was looking for a zoom to cover 200+ with relative ease, i.e. natively, without the use of TCs for travel, ease of use etc and the choices were as follows:
                    1. 70-300 IS USM - discounted because of the slow focussing issues associated with the rotating front element.
                    2. 100-400L - discounted because of weight, and the fact that I wouldn't use 200-400mm that often. I just wanted a little more reach that the 70-200 could provide natively without using the TCs when shooting the little one in the park, but didn't need to go all the way to 400mm.
                    3. 100-400L II - discounted for the same reasons as above, plus the price. Looks like a lovely lens though... :)
                    3. 70-300L - discounted because of price, and the fact that it is a slow lens for the price. Poor value IMO.
                    4. 70-300 IS USM DO - managed to pick-up a mint copy on eBay for £380! They're currently selling on Amazon brand-new for £1100, so I think I've got a bargain here!? :)
Anyone used the 70-300 DO? Any opinions on this weird lens?

A little bit of trivia. This lens is the top selling L lens since pre-ordering was announced online.

It is outdone by the Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III Lens and Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II Lens.
