    HELP - Recovery software??

My first ever disaster and with the wife's photos not mine so Im not going to hear the last of this.

I got distracted earlier when I started my routine for processing some morning photos today and usually I swap the cards over and format the memory card in camera ready for the next shoot we do...

However, this morning...I forgot to swap the cards over and boom - formatted this mornings pictures and not the previous lot...

Does anyone know of cheap / free good software recovery program - anyone recommend or use one currently for disasters like this?

    Thanks in advance

    Andy.

I thought if you formatted it that was it gone - the only way recovery could be used is if you deleted ...

I maybe wrong and hope for your sake I am

I think it depends on how its formatted - some formatting is just a quick delete all files. Luckily we have my photos from this morning...which are always better...LOL ;)

OK - have somehow managed to rescue 58 .tif files - even though shot in RAW - used a freebie program called EaseUSDataRecovery Free - anyone know if there is a RAW recovery at all? There is no details saved with the TIF files recovered at all...but if thats all that is lost then so be it.

        Thanks again in advance.

I think the image data, may still be there Andy, and remains so until over-written, but I'm not 100% on this.

There are companies that offer a data recovery service, but at what cost, I don't know.

Although I "wipe" a hard drive, when I pension it off, I also introduce it to a 4lb Club Hammer.

Hope you manage to recover the data.

Thanks Dave - Im just trying another program I found to see if it can rescue the RAW file (.cr2). if not I will make do with the .tif and key in all the data in lightroom to each photo - its only 58 pics...luckily it wasnt a special event or anything - just a frosty morning stroll. It just so happens its my wifes pictures not mine so I will never hear the last of this now...

                Hi Andy
have you tried Recuvva by Piriform its a free program and I managed to rescue files that were accidentally deleted on a card, not too sure if it will find raws but worth a punt for free

Cheers - just reading about that one now. Also have just downloaded (on a friends recommendation) CardRecovery and am in middle of a scan at moment and its recognising .cr2 files in the scan - just waiting for it to finish to see what it can do.

Andy, what make is the card? some card comes with a recovery software, my Lexar came with Image rescue and it surprised me when i scanned on a formatted second hand CF card not Lexar make to find some 200 images. I run this programme just to check that he has not got any illegal photos as i will be owning this card.

Raj - thanks - thought of that - and again this is where I need to even things out with the wife...LOL... I have nice fast SanDisk Extreme/ultras - whereas it was a cheap kodak card :).

Luckily though it would appear that I have been successful in getting the .cr2 and all data with it - just paid for this software:

worked a treat and am now successfully importing the .cr2's into Lightroom catalogue...my life has been rescued :)

                        Re: HELP - Recovery software??

What brand are the Cards? Some Sandisk cards come with a free recovery programme which has worked for me in the past (even worked with a rubbish Fuji CF card). On my old computer I had a couple of "industrial strength" commercial programmes which my lad had got for me (he works with computers) which worked after several times of formatting and use, but I no longer have access to these and I can't for the life of me remember the names.

Thanks John. I appear to have managed to rescue the .cr2's with the program just mentioned. I too had some "industrial strength" programs for IT forensic work but unfortunately no longer had access to them and cannot remember the names of them LOL. I must admit I was in a panic initially hence the urgent post, but once calmed down and the nagging stopped (as she had to get ready to go out), a friend suggested the above program and its worked.

Thanks all for popping in and helping anyway. All are now in Lightroom for her to view :)

Recovery software used to be already on the card when purchased. When you do a quick erase it just erases the flag pointing to the data which is still there and is just over written but now you know that. If you have a lot of the same cards after a shoot it is always good practice to mark the ones which contain the pictures. I have been in the same boat myself and that awful sinking feeling in the stomach is never good especially when someone has paid for the pictures lol Editors are never the best people to give lame excuses too they have heard them all before lol. Glad you recovered the Wife's pictures, dinner in the dog is always best avoided lol

Thanks Treff - I have two cards for each camera - the worst is both my cards are the same 64gb sandisk ones and I have two completely different cards (an 8gb Sandisk and a 4gb Kodak) - I have a very strict routine I follow swapping the cards and batteries over after each trip out - unfortunately half way through doing it today I was distracted and went back to it and I know what happened now - I swapped them over before being distracted, then when I returned - swapped them over again thining I had not done it...

I will be adding another step to my process now and that is before formatting the disk I am swapping back into the camera, I press "play" and preview the last picture taken - I will then know if its the last card or the todays used card :)
