    Re: Cross polarisation

Now I like that very vivid. The stress parterns have always fascinated me with their colours

      Re: Cross polarisation

I worked on a research project once at a University.

They had scale models of various railway bridges made from clear plastic, filled with clear oil. A model railway was fixed to the top and the engine and carriages were weighted to the appropraite scale. With a large sheet of polarised gel behind the model and a polariser on my lens, the train was run at slow speed across the bridge, as I took about 30 shots of the journey.

The final cross polarisation results showed the potential stress areas, frame by frame across various bridge designs.

All done by computer modelling now!

        Re: Cross polarisation

Read about this here at EOS-forum and had to try it out:

First try...an old cheap plastic clock ("The wheels of Time"):

Second ("Inject some Colour into your Life"):

Both shot in front of my monitor...works nicely.

Liking the orange straws, and the wheels of time.

I tried holding a CF card case in front of the screen, I didn't see any colours -
Do I need to take a pic to see the colours ?

Trev, put a polorizing filter on a lens then take a shot

                Re: Cross polarisation

                Thanks David,

I got a polarising filter, held it in front of the plastic and saw the colours and the FX when rotating the filter.

It's a good trick, thanks for sharing Coda !

                  Hello Trev,

David is correct: you need a polarizing filter to see the effect (or polarizing sunglasses ).
You can use any clear-plastic object, but I found that cheaper plastic gives the best results (more strain lines)

Try it out for yourself; it's fun!

Yes, I must give it a go.

I've started one of those photographic 52s this year, I might slip a cross polarization shot into that

Can I ask what is a "photographic 52s"?

                        Hi Deegee,
                        photographic 52s = a collection of 52 pics
Pick your best picture of the week, or take one a picture every week for a year.
You could set yourself a challenge if you want

It's interesting to look back at , I started 1st jan this year, so I have two snaps on my facebook 52 album.

Wondered what it was. Wouldn't mind a go at that...sounds interesting. Something to get me out and about with the camera.

Mind you my first two weeks of this year have been spent laid up with flu. I'll have to pin a month onto the end. But I do think I may have a go with this cross polarisation technique. Some of the images its produced are wonderful.

                          Thanks.

There will be times when you will be in the field without a camera. And, you will see the most glorious sunset or the most beautiful scene that you have ever witnessed. Don't be bitter because you can't record it. Sit down, drink it in, and enjoy it for what it is!

                                Re: Cross polarisation

I had to have a go at this, so spent a hour locked infront of the computer.

Have to say, its a jaw dropping moment when the colours appear.

This is taken with a pink screen behind it. Doesn't bring the same range of colours to the image, but I still like the play that it gives, when you consider that with out the filter all you see is the pink screen and clear plastic.

This one is done with a green screen behind.
