    Practicing Flash work

Cold rainy day today, so while watching the NFL Playoffs, thought I would set up a mini studio and practice with my flashes.

    Here is the Set-up:

The 1st image I only fired the 580ex

The 2nd image I fired both flashes

The 3rd image Both flashes fired but I remove the white reflector

I am find the first image more appealing and I think it is because of the blue backdrop which takes away the effect of the other lights. I see the blue and my eyes are transfixed.

Thanks David for the comments. The backdrop is gray, but the 430 EX had a blue gel on it.

I prefer the second image in terms of framing but am not keen on the blue gel effect. But in terms of overall look at the moment it probably is the first image.Did you try moving the flash further round to get more of the 'Rembrandt' effect with the shadow on her cheek? It might also need some diffusing to soften the light a little and make it a touch less harsh.

I'm with the guys the blue effect isn't working - the first is nice I like the framing - "IF" I was being picky maybe turn the Mrs a tad as the shoulder is a bit too full on

          PS 10/10 for the graphic

The first is the best shot - the blue gel is a bit harsh in the others.

What are you diffusing the 580 with ?

Thanks Andy, Ian, & Stan. I used a 6 x 8 softbox on the 580. Should of used a larger one one. What is nice about the blue is it gives me full control of the background when I convert it to black & White

That makes sense, be interesting to see those and how they compare.

agree, I see why now, although I do like the background colour in the first

                    Cheers Tom

I was wondering if that was giving the reflection along the edge of her glasses lens on the left - as you look at the shot
