Partial Eclipse in the UK Friday 20th March

For those of us in the south the eclipse should be some 84% complete. The further north you are the more complete the eclipse will be.

I've just invested in a sheet of Baader Astrosolar Safety film which I will glue to a filter ring to protect the sensor & my eyes.

(No I don't sell it or have any financial interest - but I've used it before & I know it works)

It starts at 8:24 - let's hope for decent weather.

My safety film is due tomorrow so 'Blue Peter' time ahead to fabricate suitable holder.

Just trying to decide on suitable start point for exposure. Planning to use my 70-200. From what I've read filter needs to be removed for total eclipse as light levels are quite low.

                  'Blue Peter' time
Where would Blue Peter be without double sided sticky tape? This was shot in AV at f8 ISO100 which resolved to a shutter speed of 1/125.

I plan to use my 550D (I don't want to risk the sensor of the 7DII) and 300mm prime with a 1.4x converter. I've had a word with the owners of a nearby car park which has a clear view of the southern & eastern horizon from the second floor. They're happy for me to work from there.

Recommend that you're very careful if you remove the filter. With 84% coverage I think I'll get enough light by upping the ISO, widening the aperture. Happy sticking!

I've a 300 and 1.4tc so might be better option looking at your image.

Filter removal is only recommended for total which is suppose to last little over 2 mins in Faroe.

I've a ND3 filter as well so have some options.

Not much time to get it right wish I'd had had a go before.

Film arrived so devised holder, I've a 100mm filter holder so made frame from stiff cardboard.

Like this, this was first try and not as neat as I wanted so did another

Then applied double sided tape and stuck on film, shown here in the holder.

Tried few different exposure settings so have reasonably good feel for this now.

Worst thing was actually getting the sun in the frame!

Well done. I would up the shutter speed to at least 1/500 th as the sun moves across the sky surprisingly quickly. No sign of sun spots - scientists say the sun has never been as quiet as this since the last ice age - let's hope there isn't a causal link between the two !

Thanks for suggestion have same shot as this but at 1/500. Just a bit darker. Brightness of this looks better to me so I'll tweek settings to use higher shutter speed.

Like you say no sun spots visible and does look very quite. Checked Solarham and more dedicated equipment can just about see a couple of small spots. There has been a CME but directed away from us.
