Re: Partial Eclipse in the UK Friday 20th March

So dumbass question... is a Lee Big Stopper enough to protect eyes and sensor?

BTW, I remember flipping my lid when my daughter pointed my camera at the sun to take a photograph several years ago - no permanent damage was done!

The Lee Big a stopper cuts down the level of visible light but let's dangerous levels of heat pass through. Don't risk you eyesight or camera sensor by using such filters

I have a variable ND filter. That enough to protect my sensor?

Nope you need something more specialised as it's no where near enough.

Cool thanks. I guess looking at its a bad thing too?

Sorry for seeming dense, I don't do astro photographs at all, mores the pity.

Yes it's a very bad thing, even when the sun is eclipsed. There will be enough light to blind you. Not the best thing for a tog!

If you can find a local astronomy shop they may have some Baader Safety film available.

I guess I've left it a little late. I'll watch it on the news :)

I plan to go a wee walk where I know there will be a clear shot and loads of people. Just going to get some crowd shots of viewers and the like. What's different from shooting right into the sun on a several exposure HDR shot to shooting this? Is the light more intense as it bends round the moon?

As has already been said, don't risk your eyesight with make-shift filter material. Baader solar-film is fine, as long as its not damaged (no pinholes).

While a sensor can be replaced, your eyesight can't. !!

Remember, it takes around 8 minutes for the the Sun's light to reach you, but only seconds to blind you

I live in the Midlands and the forecast for the "greatest" eclipse is looking OK.
