Canon 1Dx noise test at 10,000 ISO

Playing around with the camera at work I took a none composed photo of an engine in a hangar which has poor lighting quality and was in a darkish corner, the photo you see is un retouched from the camera, simply reduced in size from a large RAW 5184 x 3156 down to a 1000 by whatever JPEG.

Lens was the 70-200L 2.8 IS USM II at 70mm

The camera was at 1/160 2.8 10,000 ISO and the lower image is a 100% crop.

100% crop of the original image

Impressed is a word I use rarely, but my 50D images look like they have leprosy at those settings. And a quick flick through Lightroom clears this image up faultlessly.

these new cameras do seem walk past high ISO levels with no problems - When I started using my 5D I didn't go past 5k now I'm often hitting 10k and higher ;o) ....

I agree, I've no concerns going to ISO 12,600.
The results are more than acceptable. And I have seen images from 5D and 1Dx cameras at higher ISO that look great.
One thing is that applying a little sharpening and noise reduction in something like Lightroom makes them even better.

Stunning and just because no one else has mentioned it - what an awesome engine! I presume it's in for a clean up / rebuild?

It is an early RR Merlin David and is sitting on display, the stand is a ww2 transportation one too, they believe it to be out of an early Hurricane but it would need a complete major rebuild to be used again. It has been advertised for sale as of late I believe.. That's the small one, it sits next to a Griffon :)
