I`ve just been given a HP 2820 laserjet printer and was told only get the genuine toner cartridges ,it this really necessary ? Or is this days gone by when the copies were poor quality?

I have had an HP LaserJet 1018 for about 8 years. When it was new I bought HP toner cartridges at about £50 a time. For quite a few years now I have been buying compatibles (from Choice Stationery) for about £12-£15 delivered. I'm quite happy with the quality of the 3rd party toner cartridges.
