    100 Challenges: Some statistics

Well, it is a wet and dreary Sunday here, so I thought I'd cheer myself up with some jolly statistics. Sad, I know.
My prompt was the general concern, recently expressed, about the lack of entries to the Challenges, so, now we've just had the 100th Challenge, I thought I go back and see what the numbers have actually been like since the first one in March 2010. So I've gone through them all and created a spreadsheet of the theme, number of entries and the winner of each. A summary of the results is as follows:
Challenges 1 to 25 Least number of entries: 4, Most entries: 17, Average: 10
Challenges 26 to 50 Least number of entries: 3, Most entries: 20, Average: 9
Challenges 51 to 75 Least number of entries: 3, Most entries: 28, Average: 12
Challenges 76 to 100 Least number of entries: 3, Most entries: 11, Average: 7
Overall Average number of entries: 10
So, we have always had Challenges with only a few entries, but what we seem to be missing recently are the occasional bumper entries. So, if we want to continue with them (and I do), let's all make a concerted effort.
One heartening thing I found was that there have been 51 different winners across the 100 Challenges so it does get spread around quite nicely. The most number of wins by anyone is 7 (take a bow, pelliott1954 ). It was also nice to see lots of names consistently appearing over the 5 years (for example, the winner of Challenge no 1 was Chris J, who is still chugging along today).
I expected to see the same subject matters cropping up a lot, but we are clearly a very imaginative lot. There were a couple of 'Still Life', a couple 'Christmas Card' and a couple '50mm lens' but apart from that it was very varied. And I have to say that there have been some cracking images entered over the years, and all entered and judged in excellent humour.
So, what does that all tell us? Not a lot really, but it filled my day. I hope that in another 5 years or so someone (maybe me) looks back at Challenges 101 to 200 and they are still going strong.

the only thing you didn't factor into this Alex was member numbers and logins ;o)... fail

interesting figures and looking at the numbers it is sliding going from 28 -11 over a quarter, but likewise member numbers could have dropped and even during the short time I've been a member here I've seen some names vanishing

I do think its a shame more don't get involved as its a bit of fun - maybe some don't enter because they don't want the presure of judging ?? - I've entered a couple and would like to do more but time with work can sometimes be a problem, but I will try to support

        Re: 100 Challenges: Some statistics

Many thanks for the statistics, Alex, I found them most interesting. It did seem to me that numbers were decreasing but perhaps not as much as I had thought.

I do wonder why we don't get more entries- sometimes I see posts from members during the course of a challenge that are screaming out to have been included in that challenge, but have been posted under "My day in Blogstown" or whatever

I consider myself a relative newbie on here but in fact it's been just about 2 years. Initially I had to steel myself to enter ("not good enough standard"....... "I'll get slaughtered"..........etc) but having made the first move I found the challenges were judged in a spirit of friendliness and fairness. Comments passed on my and others' work have all helped me to improve.

Being a winner and having to judge others was also a learning curve, I went online to read about criteria that others apply and that helped me focus.

I too am disappointed when out of allegedly 8,000 members (how many active?) we get only a handful of entries but don't know what else to do to encourage others. We all keep writing " go on give it a go we don't bite on here!"

Personally I think a challenge that allows your own interpretation but within a clear framework, helps focus the thinking. Does "Anything Goes" or "XXX lens" attract more new entrants than as "Xmas Card", "Water" etc.?

We look forward to the next challenge. Onwards and Upwards

There was a time when the forums had a problem with posting a link to a Flickr image. I remember that it would sometimes happen to me (error message on posting) and then sometimes not. Hasn't been a problem for a while, but perhaps that put some people off? I know that I didn't use the forum for sometime while the problem was on going.

that problem is still hit'n'miss for me, took a few attempts this morning to upload and last week needed to host a couple of images to get them to display here

we don't have a fraction of those members active Boo and I would be surprised if its anymore than 20/30 ?

A lot of B2B forums have "fire sales" where members have to return to update passwords as this keeps the member count more active and true indication of member numbers.. Maybe Robert should do that and we'll see true user numbers

Huh? From whom ? From Admin for winning a challenge or did you send him one?

(I've never had one for winning)

Bo, a good point. The most popular (in terms of numbers of entries) have been:
                              Challenge 54: Nature (28 entries)
Challenge 29: My favourite... (20 entries)
                              Challenge 68: Textures (20 entries)
Challenge 74: Colour popping (20 entries)

                              And the least popular:
                              Challenge 36: Halloween (3 entries)
Challenge 48: Street Fair in 50 (3 entries)
Challenge 56: Happy 40th birthday, Joanna (3 entries)
Challenge 81: New beginnings (3 entries)

I think that you would definitely say that there is more scope for entries in the top 4 subjects than the bottom 4. But, for me, I like there to be a bit of a challenge (the clue is in the name) and simply rotating between Nature, Landscape, People etc would get a tad tedious.
As an aside, somewhat selfishly, low entries can be good. I have won a number of times, but I now see that never when more than 8 people have entered. I wonder what that tells you...
