    Death of a laptop...

Or should I say...my laptop looks to be terminally ill! I currently have a sony vaio that is approaching 4 hrs old and is tired, slowing down and needs replacing. My primary uses are for work (school teacher so mainly excel and word documents) and photography. Can anyone offer any ideas (now Sony no longer make laptops) as to the best option for a new laptop.

Two things to keep in mind...I don't want a Mac.

I don't have room for a desk top (and they are not portable).

    Many thanks in anticipation.

4 hrs old? That's barely out of the shop!

I'm in the same boat at the moment. I bought my VAIO two years ago as it was just the right size to fit in my camera backpack. Just recently it's got slower and hesitant in operation, so I had my lad look at it. He cleared out the recycle bin, deleted any programs I never used and put a new security program on, as the one I was using slowed down the operation itself. It's now running a lot faster, but I've decided I want something with a bigger screen and faster in operation, so I'll be watching this thread.

Just to clarify when you say photography what software are you using? Are you using the laptop for image storage as well?

The running of Office apps aren't too demanding.

I use DPP and Photoshop CS5...and I store images in several places (including but not primarily the laptop).

I always assumed as soon as it hit the shops it was out of date

Second that. My wife has an Asus which did something similar. Before doing anything else I would uninstall as much of the pre-installed Sony garbage as possible and make sure you delete all the temporary files lying around, I'd recomend you take a look at ccleaner to make sure the disk is tidy - https://www.piriform.com/ccleaner but do that after deleting all this rubbish Sony games and utilities...

That's a thought, I've never used any of the VAIO utilities, in fact I find them irritating, yet I've never considered deleting them. Might try it and see if it makes a difference to mine.

Thanks for all the help so far peeps...but...I really need a new laptop...my technician in school has done all that can be done...cleared out the junk etc. I asked him what to buy and he said...'you should ask people who use theirs for photos not me, I hate computers.'

Macbook air with a couple of external disks. More expensive but better value for money...

                          Re: Death of a laptop...

Think all laptops are the same just a different brand name, just make sure you get one with the latest hardware (intel i7, plenty of ram more the better, big hard drive for all your files etc etc!) probably doesn't help but just go for the best spec you can stretch too and don't worry what company makes it.

                          Paul

ps- i use a 17in screen laptop but I've being told nobody does this size anymore so you'll be stuck at 15in screens.

Can you add more Ram (memory) to it also if its that slow then re-install the OS (windoze) and uninstall all the crap that sony put on it

My laptop is now running a bit faster since I got rid of all the Sony stuff, it was definitely worth doing.
