    Lens hood

I've spent 6 months watching eBay for an original hood for my siggy 70 200, only one popped up briefly for a few minutes before selling at a ridiculously high price. Not wishing to mess about with a screw in one I finally decided to make one. It fits the original bayonet and retains the reversible mount, just like the original. uploadfromtaptalk1434631797099.jpguploadfromtaptalk1434631864754.jpgIt cost me a couple of hours, and old plastic jug and the remains of a tin of paint. I even managed to ponce a piece of self adhesive black flocked material to line the inside from a local company. Chuffed with that

Sigma use gold on their posh lenses, lol. I can imagine that there are people out there that would actually paint a red ring on a lens to keep up with the Jones's though.

So being a novice, how does the hood help ... glare I assume?

not just glare, I had a tumble last year and the hood saved my lens

                    Re: Lens hood

I have been aware under some circumstances of glare/reduction of contrast if I am shooting in the general direction of the sun. The main reason I have made it is as Ian has said, protection. I've had dog tongues or noses across the front of the lens several times and it has picked up a couple of tiny marks too . With a hood in place anything close to the front hits the hood rather than the optics.
