100D - Do I need to sharpen the images?

Images out of the 100D seem sharper than images from the 60D.

For the 60D JPGS I normally use:-
Photoshop Elements, Layers, High Pass roughly a radius of 6 and Soft Light.

This is too strong for the 100D, and have put the radius around the 3 mark.
I am wondering do I need to sharpen at all?
When I have time I thought I might do a comparison test, but thought someone might have had similar experiences and save me the time, or have you set a User Defined Picture Style?

    What do you do?

I shoot in Jpeg with my 100D and I have set my picture styles in camera, and find that I don't need much sharpening in PS at all.

Due to the anti-aliasing filter on most digital cameras, all shots will need a certain amount of sharpening

Generally as you head towards the consumer end of camera ranges the JPEGs are given a bit more pop by the manufacturers. I would assume it's that.

Nathaniel, can I be cheeky and ask you what you set the Picture Styles to? Thanks.

It might be a good idea to have a look at the images at 100% on your monitor - just to check they are not damaged by over-sharpening. It probably doesn't matter now but if you come back to them later to make some big prints it could be an issue.

I never overwrite the original file. As I have learnt more I wonder what I was thinking of with previous versions!

Re: 100D - Do I need to sharpen the images?

Jan, no problem with "cheek"!!!!!! We are all learning. The picture styles I have set are as follows:-
                  Automatic: 3
                  Standard: 4
                  Portrait:2
                  Landscape:4
                  Neutral and faithful: 0

                  Detail set:
Sharpness:+5 (can go up to 7)
                  contrast: +1 notch from 0
                  saturation:+1 notch from 0
                  Colour tone:0

Please note that you can only set picture styles when in creative mode. In the green square, auto mode the style is chosen by the camera

Once set I do not adjust for any pictures.

I hope this is of some use.

Re: 100D - Do I need to sharpen the images?

Today I conducted a few experiments using Nathaniel's settings saved as User Defined 1, and am happy to report that I am pleased with the results. Comparing with Auto+ you can see it is sharper, but not overdone. Tomorrow we are going to London, so intend using it then.
                    Many thanks, Jan.

Glad it has worked out OK for you. More pleased that the 100D is a gem of a little camera!

Yes, indeed, a fabulous little camera. I"m just wondering what its replacment (EOS 150D?) Is going to be like?

Hopefully, the replacement will be Canon's REAL mirrorless series of bodies! Sometime in the next decade?

Still waiting for mirrorless with an EVF, but in the meantime I take mine everywhere, too, often with just the 24mm F2.8 "pancake lens". Fast, convenient, and the angle of view is similar to the old time box cameras of my childhood!
