    Visiting Australia - Victoria

I will be travelling to Australia in mid-October for 4 weeks; primarily to represent my Dad, and the rest of the family, at my Aunt's (Dad's Sister) 100th Birthday celebrations.

I will be based in the Yarraville district of Melbourne and I am looking for photographic location ideas from those who know the area. I do have a few locations in mind but I would be pleased to hear from others with regards to any additional information from other members. I will be mainly looking for landscapes and wildlife opportunities.

Any help and assistance will be much appreciated.

If you are prepared to travel a few miles (or ks in the local lingo) I would head for a town called Beechworth, a real old mining town with significant 'Ned Kelly' associations. Masses of photo opportunities in and around there. Also worth a visit if you have time and inclination is the alpine region, where being really spring there will still be snow on the ground in the mountains - nothing like the 'image' of Australia.
Whatever and wherever you end up doing have a great time - highly recommended!

      Hi Bob,

I've recently returned from Australia, based in South Melbourne for part of my time. I would recommend hiring a car and doing the Great Ocean Road, it can be a long day I took twelve hours, but maybe you might have time to take a day or two, you can take the tourist trips from Melbourne, but you have to fit in with their photo stops not necessarily the best spots or enough time to do justice.

If you look at Google Maps, you can zoom in and get some ideas of places to visit that show some photos of good locations such as https://www.google.co.uk/maps/place/...4d07be!6m1!1e1 This is Erskine Falls along the route. There is always the Twelve Apostles if you don't mind huge tourist crowds.

Another is an evening by the Yarra in Melbourne near the Crown Casino, they have a nightly fire display using gas burners, which I enjoyed, starts about 7:00pm.

When you say wildlife, if you don't mind Sanctuaries, zoos etc, to the East is Healesville Sanctuary, you get the traditional photos of Koalas and Kangaroos, but many other animals. You are also in the Heart of the Dandenongs, for more Landscape opportunities.

In the city I would recommend a day walking round the Parks - Fitzroy Gardens, Botanic Gardens, etc.

      Cheers
      John

Phillip Island and the fairy penguins is a must. Allow a half day tp get there, book one of the private evening "shows" when hundreds and hundreds of the little penguins come ashore and walk just a couple of meters past you. You will need to book overnight at one of the motels on the island and then drive back to Melbourne the next day. I stayed at the Motel which also has a Caravan Park. Go back to Melbourne via the Mornington Peninsula.

The "private" show will only be about 6-8 in the group and you go down onto the beach, sit in a mini deck chair and given a pair of night vision binoculars. You then walk back to the main area after a couple of hours of watching the penguins and walk beside them as they return to their burrows for the night. The general "show" is crowded and you sit in an amphitheater arrangement along with a 100 or so people.
Phillip Island also has a Koala Sancturary worth a visit with plenty of Roos and Koalas.

Go to Melbourne Gaol and see where Ned Kelly was hung.

A must is a visit to the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). The size of the place will amaze you.

If you really want "wildlife" the northern sector is the best i.e Darwin. Don't miss Sydney as well-if you can make it. OZ is a vast country.

Heallesville animal sanctuary to the north of Melbourne is well worth a visit.

Melbourne itself is great with lots of interesting photo opportunities day and night. Flinders Street station is one of the great buildings of Australia in my opinion. Ligon St for the ethnic restaurants, the Victoria market and the walk along the Yarra on Southside is excellent. Watch out for the gas burners after dark.

Also a trip up to the Dandenongs is good. We liked SkyHigh for the views.

              Hi Bob,
We go into the city at night along the river for some city landscapes. There are 3 Zoos, 1 near the city you can catch a train, the other 2 you need a car and it is further away 1 hour. There are beaches about, the Great Ocean road is fantastic if you have a spare 2 days. There are lanes with street art in the city. Sydney is well worth a visit too. If you want to catch up when you are here PM me. Jenny

                Hi Folks,

Many thanks for all of your input, much appreciated.

My family commitments and plans, so far, are going to restrict me to the state of Victoria and I will take on board your ideas. As most of the family on my side live around Moe and Yallourn so the Dandenongs are a good bet. Also Phillip Island, the Great Ocean Road were already on the list. I will also try and head to Ballarat as Wilma loved it there when she lived in Australia.

As I say, my plans are not fixed and I will compile a list in a couple of weeks. I have reserved a car for 21 days so I will be mobile.

Thanks for your offer Jenny, I will probably take you up on that.

                Thanks Again to you all
