    September/October- Sunset to night sky

Was thinking SUNSET TO NIGHT SKY might be a good topic for this month's theme:-

    * We have the equinox coming in a few days, when sunsets usually more dramatic
    * Supermoon coming soon
    * Inspired by Andrew's recent Milky Way shot-it seems ordinary mortals can take these shots, not just the astroboys although we'd love them to show us how it's done

    Any takers?

Re: September/October- Sunset to night sky

" An equinox is an astronomical event in which the plane of Earth's equator passes the center of the Sun. Equinoxes occurs twice a year, around 21 March and 23 September.

The equinoxes are the only times when the subsolar point (the place on Earth's surface where the center of the Sun is exactly overhead) is on the Equator, and, consequently, the only times when the Sun is at zenith over the Equator. The subsolar point crosses the equator, moving northward at the March equinox and southward at the September equinox. The equinoxes are the only times when the solar terminator is perpendicular to the Equator. As a result, the northern and southern Hemispheres are equally illuminated."

      From Wikipaedia.

I always think sunsets are more impressive, often with reds and flaming oranges, around these 2 periods

Full moon - supermoon- due 28th.

Just had a little cruise around the web to see if my impressions of best time of year for sunsets are substantiated. Some support for "spring and autumn" so maybe this is why.
Although of course variation is found geographically. Would be interested to hear from our chums spread wide across the globe.

This was September, although a week or so ago, so pre-equinox:

Actually, I have often found December one of my favourite sunset months:

But I will be on the lookout if the cloud ever lifts right now!

Your earlier ( December 2013) sunset was indeed spectacular!! Amazing water colours.

Would you consider chopping a bit off the left side of last week's shot? I find my eye keeps ignoring the black bits and going off to the right.

TBH I have so many photographs of the lake and the sunset, I regard this as one in the series. I did play with the lead in on the black...

However, back on topic, I went out on the equinox to catch the sunset. One small setback, there were a few clouds:

Or a smaller section (one frame only...):

My evidence so far is not convincing that equinox sunsets are better than the rest of the time, but the clouds certainly light up well!

Thought I ought to have a go at the supermoon. I wish I'd read jim'sphotography notes before I had a go but even though my blood mooon is not as clear as I'd have liked I'm consoling myself with the thought that at least I WUZ THERE.
