Thanks, chaps. If anyone is interested, the tutorial I followed, with other example images is:
How to create twirling art from your digital images using Photoshop. Use the swirl effect in Photoshop for stunning abstract art.
Following the above tutorial gives a nice enough pattern, and is the background to my image (i.e. without the 'face'). I wanted to take it a little further and add a bit of scariness so went back my original and carried out a much lesser distortion to the central face and then tried to blend that in.
