Twirls

There are a few images around at the moment where people are fiddling with the 'Twirls' distortion in Photoshop and Elements. Had a bit of a play this morning. It is easy and quite fun, but not everyone's cup of tea, I guess.

Following the above tutorial gives a nice enough pattern, and is the background to my image (i.e. without the 'face'). I wanted to take it a little further and add a bit of scariness so went back my original and carried out a much lesser distortion to the central face and then tried to blend that in.

What did the original image look like

Generally the technique pretty well destroys the image, but you can try to keep a sense of the colour palette or distribution, although clearly lots of flipping, rotating and blending mess it up rather. My original was:
