    Re: any advise on websites

If you don't have the time or know how i can recommend smugmug it is easy to get up and running your images will look nice clean and sharp you also have full control over your pricing and they use a top quality printing lap with every option open to you (or should i say your customers).

You can link your domain name to the site as i have done (with help from Ian).
I also like it because it runs itself all i do is upload the images and arrange the folders and galleries and smugmug looks after any sales vat/taxes so one less thing for me to worry about.

The hardest part of any website is to get people viewing(not friends and families but customers) and keeping the site updated on a regular basis.
I used twitter a lot to attract new people and linked everything to my website and at the height of the sporting season i attracted over 120,000 views on a weekly basis so with a little use of social media in what ever form it has the power to attract people towards your own site.

smugmug is another free or leased option and yes its easy to set up, but so are blogs

If you do use smugmug make sure its with your own domain otherwise you'll end up with a long domain including the URL smugmug - Its easy to redirect your own domain to smugmug

I have to be totally honest - I'm a complete idiot when it comes to computers, developing web sites etc. I therefore use smugmug as it was a breeze to setup and very easy to change the format if you get bored with it

James, I've had a quick look at your site and I hope you don't mind me asking questions.

Is there any set up destructions (sic) for Smugmug, as it's a long time since I dabbled with web building and even then I was using early versions of Frontpage?

Also do you have to retain the Smugmug logo on your pages?

Did you choose the sizes available for print purchase and where does you purchased prints go to for printing?
            Peter

I'm guessing it would depend what type of account your on, free users have no control paid users can control location & size of logo

There are loads of YouTube videos on advice on how to do this or that with Smugmug.
I just type what I want to know how to do followed by the term Smugmug and you get loads of useful answers or video answers
If you want to do something out of the norm then there is a live tech chat room open all day Monday to Friday where you can ask a Smug-mug tech guy questions on line - very helpful guys who understand the system backwards
I just load up the largest file I had for each image and the customer chooses the size they want to order
Is this the best site ?I don't know but it works for an idiot like me
                Ok?

No Peter you can turn it on or off in the settings.

As for printing as long as you don't resize your images(make them too small)you have a limitless options on printing all done by UK printers Loxley colour so top quality is guaranteed.

                        Hope that helps a little.

I found references to excessive shipping charges with smugmug? I am using shootproof, but google doesn't like the domain so I'm revisiting the options. I set my own prices and self fulfil, using dscl for larger stuff. This works well.
