Thanks Ian, I think I made the right choice thanks to your advice and others. Unfortunately the ring flash won't be here until next Friday but the off camera speed light worked fairly well today.

the ring flash will give you a lot more freedom and ease of use - I'm sure you'll come to enjoy the setup

              Re: first macro shots

Alan, I've watched loads of Youtube videos and read-up a lot ....I even had a dabble in macro when I had the Olympus gear but was not very successful. My challenge to myself is now not to take simple illustrative shots but apply composition and lighting as with other genres....but I think that is a big challenge for me.

Lovely, Brian. I have been thinking recently that the 100 2.8 will be my next lens. You have just nudged me a little closer to it.

                    Re: first macro shots

Thanks Guys...I'm really pleased with the lens...must try some portraits.
I was tempted by the non L version (no IS though) and the Tamron SP90 (not sure about the build quality but EISA lens of the year)....but all things considered the L version with £75 cashback, super build, IS and good resale value had to be the one.
I have a ring flash on order due Friday...looking forward to that.

Superb sire and a good choice on the glass. Both Cory and I started out with the Tamron 90mm and still recommend it to anyone on a budget, as for the 100 - it is awesome at portraits and bike racing / car racing / town and city shots. . . . . it pretty much rocks!
