    Autumn leaves

Just playing with some back-lit autumn leaves and extension tubes on my 50mm. As an old cartographer I always like how leaves can look so terrain-like, almost landscapey.

    Re: Autumn leaves

Both are well thought and photographed, but for me the 1st one has the edge based on the texture. patterns and color. Well done Alex.

I think the first is very effective as an abstract graphical detail image. There is so much detail - more than you would normally see that makes it interesting.

I quite like the first but could perhaps found a leaf without the brown spots

Tom, Brian, Stan, thanks for stopping by and commenting. In my head there is an interesting image along the lines of number 2 but clearly this isn't it. Back to the drawing board...

I like the second one, it's different, I take it you lit it from underneath?

Tigerburnie, thanks, and yes, in fact the leaf was lying directly on top of the light.

Alex I like them both, BTW many moons ago a mag did an article, they took dead leaves, submerged them in water then froze it in the freezer, they looked spectacular in ice...

Nice, I like the patterns you captured with those.
The first stands out to me, but I can see what you were doing with the second.

The first could almost be butterfly or mouth wings.

Tony, thanks for the suggestion and the link. And yes, I do like the effect of things encased in ice then backlit. In fact here's a shot I did earlier this year (albeit berries not leaves):

So yours is a timely reminder of this style, and autumn/dead leaves do work very well. It is a slight faff getting the ice nice and clear and bubble free (as you can see I failed miserably), so I'll be experimenting over the next couple of weekends.
