Latest Issue and af @ f8

Latest issue arrived in time for Christmas today. Only had a quick look so far but on the Q & A pages someone is asking about autofocussing at f8 and it is stated that the only EOS cameras that will do so are the EOS-1D series and EOS 5D Mark III...............erm...what about the 7D Mk II ?????

To be honest Stan, I'm not sure what's meant about autofocussing at that F stop. Is this when coupled with an extender???

Re: Latest Issue and af @ f8

Most EOS cameras will only autofocus with lenses whose maximum aperture is f5.6 or larger and that is basically every lens in the Canon line up. However as soon as you add an extender to the equation the situation changes - a 1.4 extender loses 1 stop of light and a 2x loses 2 stops, which means that a lens which is f5.6 becomes an f8 or f11 and neither will autofocus. Alternatively if you have a fast prime, one with a maximum aperture of f2.8, life your 70-200 f2.8 L, then it will become either an f4 or f5.6 and autofocus will be retained on the whole EOS range of cameras

Some EOS cameras will retain autofocus at f 8 but only with the central focus point and in the reply to the Q & A, it states that the only cameras that will do so are the EOS-1D series and the 5D Mk III - missing the fact that the 7D II will also retain autofocus at f 8. Most surprised that Robert has not picked it up

Thanks for the detailed explanation Stan. I figured this was the meaning of the wording. And as you say with my F2.8 and 2x extender I get F5.6. I great combination for a 400mm set up

I sometimes use my 2x with the 70-200 f2.8 when I go to Marwell zoo to have the wider flexibility of taking just the one lens and although it was a bit hit and miss with the original 7D, using it with the Mk II loses very little IQ

Totally agree. Although not used the combination that much, where I have it performs

                  Hi Stan

I am under the impression that with an extender of 1.4X or 2X autofocus can be achieved with central focus point (as you mentioned) in live view on a 7D MK II I have auto focussed at f11 with 2X in live view.

You have stated "missing the fact that the 7D II will also retain autofocus at f 8"

My question is...... would that mean a lens with max of 5.6 and an 1.4X on 7D Mk II will retain autofocus at f8 outside the live view ?
