    Photos for the German press

My lady friend is German and she has lived in Greece for about 30 years. She has taken up photography a few years ago, but she is doing real well. As she needs some cash to complement her meager pension, I suggested that she write to German journals and news papers (to start with) that may be interested in photos from Greece. She would like to do this but does not know where to start. I would appreciate any ideas.

just sending emails won't cut it, I'm sure papers must get thousands of emails from wannabe togs - a better way would be to get out on the streets and get some current news related photos and submit those to the paper asking if they wanted to buy them.. Basically create a need for them to want her, rather than the other way round

But its not going to easy and she will have to be a stunning tog

Thank you for your response Ian. It doesn't look like she is going to push real hard. She is a rather soft type of a person. I will pass your comments on to her, anyhow. Thanks again.

if shes soft I can't see her cutting it as a press tog, its all about elbows and pushing to the front - I wish her luck

She could always submit photos to Alamy or if current Alamy News. If it's just stock images she'll need to build a good sized portfolio (3,000+ images) but current news (shot in the last few hours) sells too. She may well have a niche in Greece for tourist stock pictures - always in demand in newspapers/brochures/guides/etc.

Update: I just checked Alamy news. There's only one set of Greek images of farmers blocking the road to Athens airport. Depending on where she's located there could be an opportunity.

Thank you both, Ian and Russel. I will recomend to her that she start with the farmers' blockades. :-)

Not exactly Epicurios the tractor dispute is now yesterday's news. Images stay on Alamy news for just 48 hours. She needs to photograph current ( happening now) images and upload them with one or two hours. But first she must get Alamy accreditation.

The procedure is explained here: http://www.alamy.com/contributor/how...e-news-images/

                    As long as that?

Shoot/caption/send there and then, not a second to lose if you want to get sales.

Appreciate what you're saying Paul, but this lady is a complete novice & needs to start somewhere. A speedy turnaround will come with experience.

It depends on how interesting the story/new is. I have just given a story about about my escape from Biafra in 1967 with some photographs to the cathedral and local press. The Cathedral is publishing it in two parts- the first instalment is already in this month's magazine and the second part will be in next month's magazine. I have not charged the cathedral for my story but the local press will also be publishing the same this week. The fees from this is being passed on to augment the funds of the Cathedral choir. So, in my books it needn't be current but as long as it has not been published before, it is interesting to the public, you have the chance of a "sale"! In money terms it is in the region of £100. Depending on my health and energy levels I am thinking in terms of a book project as well ,as I have 1000's of slides.
