Just learning new environment, stick most Windows users in front of a Mac and they'd have a period of learning.

I found moving from Windows to Mac very easy - I only thing I struggled with was the way Macs file documents in folders and don't update the folder date, this is a huge problem when uploading data to remote folders on servers, but most people will never have this problem - run of the mill stuff , easy, better & a lot faster

Re: Which Windows should I go for?

Going from W 8.1 to 10 was fairly straight forward UI wise , 7 to 8 was a pain , Vista to 7 wasn't too bad , as has been said the hardware stuff is the problem .
I always said i'd never have anything Apple...... When my Droid tablet became a pain i bought an iPad , what a revelation ! When my Windows Laptop recently started misbehaving i bit the bullet (and opened my wallet a little wider....) and bought a 13" Macbook Pro Retina , to say this has been a revelation is truly an understatement , the build quality is amazing , the UI takes a bit of getting used to but no more than some Windows upgrade , i honestly wish i'd moved earlier ! As Ian said the filing system is a pain to start with , also the smaller disk took some getting used to but i make better use of my NAS's now , LR , PS and Office are layed out slightly differently in Mac X but soon figured out . In the future when my desktop PC really starts to grind i'll have no problem moving over to an iMac .
I would serious consider a Mac of some sort Nathaniel .

Re: Which Windows should I go for?

I went from XP to Win7 to Win10 and find windows 10 very easy & user friendly. If sticking with Windows, it's the best option now what with free upgrade at the moment.

With regard to Apple, I have nothing against them as such but two things put me off:

I like that with a PC, if you need/want to replace a hard drive, memory, RAM etc, you just remove the side panel, change what you want & that's it. Not so easy with a Mac.

Secondly & more importantly is cost. A similarly spec'd PC will cost you less than half of what the Apple version will be - I know, I recently replaced my PC & spec'd it well above my actual needs but looked at Apple equivalents for which I'd have had to take out a mortgage!

I'd say stick with PCs unless money is no object.

With my old iMac I added additional RAM but beyond that never needed any internal updates.
And from the day I got it to the day I replaced it with a newer one it started up and logged in with equal speed.
My current iMac is standard as supplied and works superbly for all editing and other software.

The other beauty of Mac for me is how quick and easy any updates are. Got a new work laptop recently and it took six reboots and multiple updates to get current and took two and a half hours, my iMac did a 1.15GB in one go and one reboot in less than 20 minutes, complete OS updates have been just as easy.

Years ago when I moved to Mac I looked back on the various upgrades I'd done and factored that in to the costs.
Whilst the Mac was a higher initial outlay it had less ongoing costs to stay operating as needed. No new video card to cope with graphics software, no processor to cope with operating system updates.
My original iMac operated far longer doing graphics intensive work than any PC I've used, so the highest initial cost is offset.

But it's all personal choice, some people love PC and some Mac.
              Andy
