    Manfrotto Micropositioning plate 454

I am using the above with my 40d and and EF 100mm macro lans, the results are pleasing however there is so much play in the area of the dovetail slider that when moving the camera back and forth the unit moves sideways enough to loose sight of the subject when using the live view mode with some magnification on the lcd viewer. Any ideas how this can be sorted, I am toying with applying a brass shim to one or other piece to lessening the play?

Whether made of a hard plastic or metal try some form of lube before you begin reconstruction. Graphite is good as it works in all temperatures and doesn't attract dust, grit etc.

A good source of graphite would be a grade 9B or EE pencil.

If you had to use grease then try and obtain some of the old Silicone based grease used back in the 70's and 80's by the forces. Went under the guise of XG315. You only need a very thin film. I have had a tube (courtesy EII) for several (hrmph many) years now, and it doesn't freeze, nor does it go tacky in heat.

    kind regards
