Re: Fill flash and flash settings

If you set the camera to AV and not have it set to HSS then you'll stop at MAX Shutter-speed, then you are forced to increase the f/stop. The down side for outdoor shots would be losing that nice background blur as you will be increasing the DOF. Your other alternative is an ND filter for outdoor images in bright sunlight.

Thanks for confirming what I assumed Tom. Having looked in the camera settings there is an option for high speed sync for the external flash but it wont set. I guess this is because the model doesn't support it. My new one on order does.

Exactly what I was concerned about. Blurring the background will be high on my agenda for wedding so will need the ability to shoot wide open

Thanks for the tip and comments Brian. The course looks great but, its 7 days later than the wedding . If this is something I will enjoy for sure I will book onto the next one.

            Hi Alan
What flash have you ordered Canon or another make,I've just bought another flash (Godox 860c) as the problem i have when using flash is waiting until it's fully charged again only takes 2/3secs but can seem a lifetime when you have to wait lol.

If things are flashing in the viewfinder then yes you need to alter something if your shutter is flashing either change the aperture or lower the ISO values until it stops, if using High speed settings on your new flash just remember you will lose some power in the output so you may need to + the exposure on the flash to boost the flash output just a little.

Or if things are going out of control and a way to get you through the day just put your camera in P mode and leave it to the camera and you'll get nice light that way without to much problem you just don't have much user control over the settings but you can then concentrate on everything else that's going on.

Paul brings up a good point. My flash has a port for an external battery pack, that I use for events as the recycle time slows significantly if you use only the internal batteries of the flash. The external battery pack allows for a faster recycle of the flash

I have ordered the Yonguo YN568EX II. The is a higher spec than the YN565EX that I had that didn't have high speed sync. It arrived about an hour ago and after a quick test in the garden I can now shoot up to 1/8000 and verything sync's. A happy chappy now.

I have considered shooting in P mode but probably only if the pressure is on or I am having troubles.

As good as the Yongnuo is, it doesn't allow for a separate battery pack. But given the amount of use it will get, wedding aside, I'm not too concerned

agree, you won't need a fast charge rate

There is an excellent facebook page (if you're on fb of course!!) called Speedlight Fundamentals (follow the link) which I am a part of. I have learnt a huge amount from this. It is a closed group, so you have to join to get on to it, but it really is excellent. The saved documents are invaluable.

                          Good Luck,

No worries. The guy who runs it, Tim Payne, is an agent for Yongnuo in America, but he doesn't push that, unless asked! He uses the page purely to teach and help. I started using a grey card because of this page. Helps a lot with exposure. There is a guy on it called Mark Jesse. A great teacher.
