I thought I would mention this as I have in another thread
I bought one of these for my 100-400II
One advantage is you can collapse it down and it fits in my bag with it installed, but the reason I bought it was for the Zoo, when taking photographs of some on the inmates you are often shooting through perspex / glass, with this replacing my original hood I can push it up against the glass and form a seal that cuts out all the reflections off the glass and improves the image, it allows you to get a light proof seal while protecting the lens as it has give if you shoot on a slight angle etc, incidentally the image I posted of the ape deep in thought was shot this way through perspex. You can get them for all lens threads and collapses as shown to various states.
