    Challenge no.119. "Repetition, Repetition"

    Repetition, Repetition

For this challenge I'd like to see 2 or more identical objects (animal, vegetable or mineral) in your picture.

Use the objects to give both shape and impact to your image.

As ever I'll do my best to give friendly and constructive comments and find a winner based on my strictly amateur status and gut feeling!

    The usual rules apply:
    • The competition subject shall be selected by the winner of the preceding competition who will also judge the competition.
    • One picture per person; images should conform to general image posting rules.
    • Please use a Canon DSLR.
    • Posted images should be taken during the running period of the competition. Any images submitted that were taken before the competition started, or after the competition has ended, will be deemed invalid.
    • Images 800 pixels widest max (to help those with small monitors).
    • No Photoshop frames and borders.
    • Include a title; the image must convey the theme without title description.
    • Please, NO comments on images- on this or another thread- until the round is over.
    • No canvassing e.g. “I’m thinking of posting this image for the challenge, what do you think?”
    • I will pick 1st, 2nd and 3rd favourite images (please don’t PM me to discuss my choices).

Closing date for entries is midnight Sunday 24 th July ...... enough time to think, take and play in PP

Give it a go folks...... Why not?

Thanks to those that took part in this challenge. I was curious to see what you’d come up with and you have not disappointed me with your choice of objects.

                            My comments follow:-

RePEAtition Lots to interest us here despite the simple composition with the classic odd number of pods artfully posed on the mirrored undersurface. Central pod nicely sharp, an extra half brownie point for the aptly punned title

Mk 1 Ford Escorts I try to be flexible but I was struggling here with your interpretation of the word “identical!” Fortunately your title tells me the connection between the 2 cars. However when I look at the image my eye keeps jumping between the 2 cars looking for something- abstract colours, lines, circles to connect the 2 motors. The fact I can’t find it probably means that the composition lacks unity.

Thought I’d lost them. I’m losing mine trying to work out how you got them to stay there! Putting that to one side, I love the idea and the moody lighting but somehow I want just a little bit more from this – one marble escaping or maybe one rogue red one?

Breakwater This is a most pleasing landscape and besides those yummy breakwaters lining up nicely for you there are great horizontal lines in both the water and the obliging clouds. As a competition entry, however, I think if you’d got down closer to sea level and tried to incorporate these 3 components you’d have had a much stronger entry

Little steampunks in a row A Street scene well spotted, and whatever a steampunk is I’m not standing around to find out as they look like little thugs to me! I find the orange background blobs and the green Tshirted guy a bit too much of a distraction and I’d love to know what first punk is looking at.

Sunflowers A sea of sunflowers- always a glad sight for a photographer. Nicely focused with good depth of field (I just had to say that!) I wish you’d got in closer and got a lower POV as then you could have picked out several or a line of flowers which would have given the “shape and impact” that I asked for in the brief.

A Moment in Time. A great idea, water spouts have an enduring appeal and produce great shapes & patterns whilst keeping within the brief. I think you’d have been better trying for 3 in a row rather than the corner shot so that the background lines and grass didn’t cut across what should dominate the picture. The middle spout is unfortunately cropped.

Pillars of strength. Brighton Pavilion I believe. Good choice of subject but it needs more to turn it into a lasting image. Shoot from the side or from ground level or focus in to, say, just 3 of the posts with a person, part of a person, or object strategically placed. Then the pillars would have impact without being overpowering

DownDog This must have been a welcome find and the chances for the extra something eg the purple girl out of line, one head up when the others are down, make this worth grabbing. The problem I suspect is that you weren’t close enough to have been able to get side on and down to their level to explore these options and so for me it just misses the mark. You may also have incurred their wrath had you done so!!

                            My winner(s) are as follows:-

1st ST-EOS RePEAtition. Sharp, sassy and memorable

2nd AlexR! Breakwater Lovely image, just wanted a bit more oomph from the main props

3rd Tigger Steampunks Made me smile!

Congratulations to my winner & runners up- but no flowers, cuddly lion or yellow shirt, and over to you (again!) Peter
